Job Description

Space Club is looking for caring, energetic, and reliable Afterschool Counselors to join our youth programs starting January 2026 Training opportunities begin as early as December 15th.

If you love working with children, staying creative, and being part of a positive team environment, this role is for you. We work with amazing NYC students (ages 4-10) and fill afternoons with art, games, building challenges, and homework help.

Responsibilities

  • Pick up students safely from local schools (walking groups using safety vests and rings)

  • Maintain active supervision, every child is visible, accounted for, and engaged

  • Lead and assist with activities such as art, games, movement, mindfulness, and study time

  • Support and encourage positive behavior and redirect misbehavior calmly and consistently

  • Communicate with Operations Managers, Youth Program Leads, and families when needed

  • Follow daily routines and program structure to ensure consistency for students

  • Work in accordance with the DOE school calendar

  • Assist with daily set-up and clean-up of program spaces and materials

  • Document or alert team members of any injuries, conflicts, or incidents

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum 1 year of group childcare experience required (school, camp, daycare, youth program, enrichment, etc.)

  • No teaching degree required, passion, patience, and professionalism are what we value

  • Experience with behavior management, redirection, and supporting healthy social skills

  • Friendly, warm presence and ability to build relationships with students

  • Consistent, punctual, and dependable, you help set the tone for the program

  • Comfortable communicating with fellow staff and families

  • Calm under pressure, solutions-oriented, and a team player

  • Routine-oriented, you understand that structure and consistency help children thrive

  • CPR/First Aid and Mandated Reporter certification a plus (not required)

Schedule & Commitment

  • Must be available Monday-Thursday, 1:30 PM-6:00 PM from December 15-June 25

  • Afterschool does not meet on NYC DOE holidays or school closure dates

  • Additional weekend shifts available in our play space, if desired
