Renewables Manager – Senior Leadership Role Solar PV | Battery Energy Storage (BESS) | Microgrids | EV Infrastructure | Heat Pumps
We're looking for a forward‑thinking Renewables Manager to lead one of the largest and fastest‑growing specialist engineering teams in the UK. If you excel at building high‑performing design teams, driving engineering excellence, and shaping technical strategy across Solar, BESS, Microgrids, and EV infrastructure — this is the role for you.
As a key member of our senior leadership team, you will be responsible for overseeing multidisciplinary engineering functions while ensuring industry‑leading standards, technical quality, and operational delivery across our renewable energy portfolio. About The Role As our Renewables Manager, you will lead a team of design engineers, senior engineers, and technical specialists across multiple renewable energy technologies. You will manage capability, capacity, process, and delivery across the department, ensuring consistent technical excellence and commercial success. You will also play a vital role in shaping long‑term strategy, developing engineering standards, supporting innovation, and guiding continuous improvement across the business.
Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership
Lead the strategic development of the design engineering function across Solar PV, BESS, Microgrids, and EV charging infrastructure.
Drive team structure, resource planning, recruitment, and skills development.
Support senior leadership with business planning, forecasting, and technical direction.
Oversee the technical governance of all renewable engineering outputs.
Team & People Management
Manage a large, multidisciplinary design engineering team with direct reports (senior designers, technical leads).
Build a culture of ownership, collaboration, and technical excellence.
Develop and deliver technical training programmes and competency frameworks.
Conduct performance management, coaching, mentoring, and succession planning.
Technical & Quality Oversight
Ensure all engineering designs comply with standards, regulations, and best practice.
Oversee quality assurance processes, audits, and technical approvals.
Act as the senior escalation point for complex technical challenges.
Evaluate and implement new technologies, tools, and engineering methodologies.
Operational & Project Support
Support cross‑functional teams across delivery, commercial, and commissioning.
Review major projects, large‑scale systems, and bespoke engineering solutions.
Provide senior input into bids, proposals, client meetings, and technical presentations.
Ensure documentation, design packs, and engineering outputs are accurate and consistent.
Innovation & Industry Engagement
Lead continuous improvement and R&D initiatives across renewable technologies.
Keep the business ahead of industry changes and future regulatory requirements.
Represent the company at technical events, conferences, and stakeholder discussions.
About You Essential Experience
Significant leadership experience managing large engineering or design teams.
Strong background in at least two of: Solar PV, BESS, Microgrids, EV Charging, heat pumps.
Proven ability to develop people, processes, and complex engineering capability.
Excellent understanding of renewable energy standards, grid requirements, and design methodologies.
Confident leader capable of influencing senior stakeholders and technical teams.
Strong organisational, communication, and planning skills.
Strong understanding in the BS 7671 wiring regulations.
Desirable
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards.
18th Edition wiring regulations.
QCF level 4 in design (2396).
Leadership or management qualifications.
Experience within a high‑growth engineering environment.
Knowledge of software tools used in Solar, BESS, heat pumps and Microgrid design.
Understanding of DNO/ICP processes, grid modelling, and energy optimisation techniques.
