Are you a hands-on problem solver with a passion for keeping public facilities safe, clean, and operational? We're looking for a Facilities Maintenance Coordinator to support the statewide Rest Area Administrator by overseeing the day-to-day operations and maintenance of rest areas, welcome centers, weigh stations, and parking-only sites across Iowa.

Location: Statewide, Iowa

  • Within five (5) months, employees are required to reside within 45 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from one of the following Rest Areas: Elkhart, Story City, Northwood or Dows, Iowa

Shift Requirements: Monday -Friday 8am to 4:30 pm, must be available to respond to urgent matters at any time, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as this role includes 24/7/365 on-call responsibilities, some overnight travel required.

As the Facilities Maintenance Coordinator, you will play a key role in supporting the Rest Area Administrator by overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, and compliance of multiple public-use facilities across the state. This position requires a proactive, organized individual who can manage contractors, maintain facility standards, and ensure seamless operations at rest areas, welcome centers, weigh stations, and parking-only sites. You'll also be responsible for coordinating repairs, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the principal assistant to the Rest Area Administrator, helping to organize, coordinate, and resolve on-site issues.
  • Manage operations and maintenance activities across multiple statewide locations.
  • Order, inventory, and maintain supplies and equipment to ensure uninterrupted facility operations.
  • Inspect and monitor 50–80 janitorial and lawn care contractors for compliance with contracts, rules, and specifications.
  • Enforce standards to ensure continuous operation of safe and sanitary facilities.
  • Perform or coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance on buildings and infrastructure.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports, including time sheets, expense reports, and maintenance logs.
  • File permits, collect water samples for lab analysis, and coordinate with the Iowa DNR to address any non-compliance issues.
  • Use computer systems and the DOT network to manage documentation and reporting.

What We're Looking For:

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in facility maintenance, contractor oversight, or operations coordination.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple sites.
  • Familiarity with safety, sanitation, and compliance standards.
  • Comfortable using computers for reporting and administrative tasks.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about water sampling and environmental compliance.

Special Requirements:

  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License
  • Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, will be required to have and maintain Wastewater Treatment 1, Water Distribution 1 certifications

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Three years of full-time work experience in the building and trades industry.
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Maintenance Repairer.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to obtain current valid Driver's License.

All of the following apply to Department of Transportation positions only:

Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Class A or B (level determined by the appointing authority) Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained in order to continue employment.

If a CDL is not designated, all positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.

In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.

Prior to starting employment, all persons are required to have a post offer pre-employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.

Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.

Employees must respond to emergency situations as required, including during non-routine working hours.
