Job Description

Provide security services for Old Dominion University. Monitor main and satellite campus grounds to ensure staff, students and visitors are safe. Make inspections of designated priority areas on a routine basis. Identify and assist with the investigation of minor or suspicious matters.

Basic familiarity with personal computers to include Microsoft Office, Outlook etc. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions to complete assigned tasks and reports. Ability to perform essential physical requirements which include standing and/or walking for extended periods. Ability to perform required tasks during periods of inclement weather. Ability to maintain a neat and clean appearance/uniform and report for duty on time. Ability to provide security services which includes working inside and outside of building during various hours of the day.

Special licenses, registration or certification

Valid driver's license and insurable record. Ability to obtain the DCJS CSO Campus Security Officer Certification within one year of employment.

Education or training

High school diploma or GED.

Level and type of experience

Some experience in a security position or in a position with related duties such as loss-prevention, facilities monitoring, or other roles helping to maintain safety and order.

Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification)

Some experience and training as a Campus Security Officer or Security Officer

Conditions of Employment

University Police Department employees are considered essential personnel for emergency conditions/inclement weather and expected to report to duty during these conditions.

Must work a rotating shift schedule which includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and any mandatory special events. Some overtime will be required based on the needs of the department.

This position is designated as sensitive. A fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required of the final candidate.

Hourly (wage) employees are restricted to working 29 hours per week on average or 1500 hours in total in the May 1 – April 30 period. This position does not have health insurance, retirement or leave.
