The Process Operator Trainee, Borger Refinery works rotating shifts in various units within the Borger Refinery which process or produce crude oil, petroleum coke, gasoline, diesel, steam and many other products. Some of the processes involved use hazardous and volatile materials under high temperature and pressure. In addition, Operators perform various duties required to keep their assigned processing unit/area operating safely and at specified production rates.

The rate during the classroom training period while on 8 hr day schedule is $32.04/hour and this moves to $28.12/hour when on the 12 hr rotating shift schedule with built in overtime. Employees may advance within the Operator pay progression based on time requirements and skills development. An Operator can reach level 5 pay, which is currently $43.30/hour, at a minimum of 36 months of time within the Operator classification. Operators may progress to the lead position of Stillman.

Candidates who receive an offer of employment will then be required to successfully complete a pre-employment due diligence process including background check, hair follicle drug screen, medical, hearing, respiratory and vision exams, and agility testing.

What You'll Do

Monitor unit operations

Turn valves

Take gauge and instrument readings

Lubricate and perform minor maintenance of equipment

Make necessary changes to ensure product is manufactured on specification

Respond to safety and environmental incidents, should they occur, in a safe and efficient manner

Enter and retrieve computer data as well as conduct data analysis

Perform work activities that include pulling, lifting, twisting, working in confined spaces and on elevated platforms requiring fall protection

Climb heights to perform duties such as opening valves

Collect process samples with potential to require fresh air

Prepare equipment for maintenance

What You'll Bring – Required Qualifications

Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions

High School Diploma/GED equivalent

Currently hold (and able to maintain) a valid driver's license

Willing and able to perform/comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:

Work at least a 12-hour rotating shift, which includes some weekends and holidays

Work overtime

Assume on-call responsibilities

Work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos

Work near large, hot, high-speed machines

Climb up to 250 feet in height

Lift up to 50 pounds

Work around chemicals, including acids and bases

Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

Wear fall protection when working at height and when required by corporate policy, local policy, and/or OSHA regulation

Perform firefighting duties

Work outside in harsh weather conditions

Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and at high temperatures

Evacuate in a safe and timely manner in the event of an emergency

Read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits, instruction manuals

Learn computer software associated with process operations

What Makes You Stand Out – Preferred Qualifications

Associate's Degree or higher in Process Technology or Engineering

3 or more years of work experience in manufacturing, heavy industry (including energy / oil & gas), public safety, and/or military

The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes primarily medium sour crude oil produced locally, and heavy sour crude oil produced in Canada, all of which are delivered by pipeline. Borger produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petroleum coke, NGLs and solvents. Refined products are distributed to customers via pipelines from the refinery to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the Midcontinent region.
