Senior Project Manager – Substation Engineering & Development
Location:
Phoenix, AZ (Hybrid)
Industry:
Power Delivery & Grid Infrastructure
Category:
Engineering / Project Management
The Opportunity
This role is intentionally designed for senior substation engineers who have built their careers inside consulting or EPC environments and are now ready to move
onto the developer/owner side
of the table.
Our client is a well-capitalized developer and owner of large-scale renewable, energy storage, and transmission infrastructure across the U.S. Southwest. The team operates as a
lean, highly technical development group
, backed by a larger platform with long-term capital, execution experience, and an active project pipeline.
As Senior Project Manager – Substation Engineering, you will retain hands-on technical influence while gaining direct ownership of projects from early development through construction and handover. Rather than producing designs, you will
own scope, outcomes, decisions, and delivery
, managing external engineers, utilities, and contractors as an extension of your team.
What You'll Do
- Act as the
owner's technical lead
for HV/MV substation scope across renewable generation, storage, and transmission projects. - Manage and technically oversee external engineering firms, consultants, and OEMs from concept through IFC and construction support.
- Lead substation development strategy, including design standards, equipment selection, constructability, and cost/schedule tradeoffs.
- Own project schedules and milestones, coordinating closely with development, interconnection, permitting, and construction teams.
- Interface directly with utilities, ISOs, and interconnection teams on technical submissions, studies, and agreements.
- Review and approve engineering deliverables, specifications, studies, and vendor packages to ensure alignment with owner objectives.
- Maintain fluency in applicable codes and standards (IEEE, NESC, utility standards) while applying practical, execution-focused judgment.
- Serve as a senior technical voice within a small, collaborative team, with real autonomy and accountability.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE required).
- PE license preferred, but not required.
- 15+ years of experience in substation engineering, ideally within a consulting or EPC environment.
- 3+ years in a project management, technical lead, or owner-facing role.
- Direct experience delivering 345kV and/or 500kV substations.
- Strong understanding of utility interconnection processes and grid integration requirements.
- Ability to communicate clearly with engineers, developers, utilities, and construction partners.
- Based in, or willing to relocate to, the Phoenix, AZ area.
Why This Role Is Different
- Transition to the developer/owner side:
Shift from executing scopes to owning outcomes. - Smaller, nimble team:
High visibility, real influence, and faster decision-making. - Backed by scale:
The stability, capital, and project depth of a larger platform without the bureaucracy. - Broader exposure:
Direct involvement in development strategy, cost control, and long-term asset value. - Meaningful impact:
Work on grid infrastructure projects that are foundational to renewable growth and energy security.
This is an ideal next step for a senior substation engineer who wants to stay technical, expand commercial and strategic influence, and help shape projects—not just design them.
