Engineering Director

The Role

Reporting to senior technology leadership, the Director of Engineering will oversee functional managers and multidisciplinary teams responsible for both sustaining existing products and developing new offerings. The ideal candidate will be an innovative leader with extensive experience directing commercial development and sustaining engineering efforts across hardware and software product lines. Familiarity with Lean R&D, visual management methods, DFSS, Agile/Scrum, traditional project management approaches, and other frameworks for guiding technical teams is essential.

This role will lead a diverse engineering organization spanning electrical, mechanical, and software disciplines. Active engagement with customers throughout the development process is a key component, so candidates must champion customer-centric design practices while working closely with project management and product leadership teams.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive new product development initiatives and support continuous improvement of existing products.
  • Build and retain a high-performing, customer-focused engineering team.
  • Lead and mentor cross-functional engineering leaders to strengthen organizational capability and meet evolving technology needs.
  • Provide technical, hands-on leadership and contribute directly to design efforts when necessary.
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives within the R&D process.
  • Lead and train staff on relevant technical skills, best practices, metrics, Lean principles, and visual management tools.
  • Establish and track key performance metrics to improve R&D efficiency.
  • Manage budgeting, staffing, and employee development activities.
  • Serve as project manager for assigned development programs.
  • Perform additional responsibilities that contribute to organizational success.

Skills and Experience

  • Master's degree in a technical discipline required.
  • 10+ years of technical leadership experience in a commercial environment, including project management, personnel oversight, and budgeting/planning responsibilities.
  • Proven track record of leading cross-functional teams in the development of advanced technologies and complex products.
  • Strong understanding of business operations, processes, and financial principles.
  • Experience applying Lean R&D practices, visual management, Agile/Scrum methodologies, and related efficiency-driven tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive both strategic planning and tactical execution within engineering organizations.
