About the Role

Barry County Lumber, a ProTec company, is seeking a motivated and relationship-driven Outside Sales Representative to join our Contractor Sales team. In this role, you will be the primary point of contact for contractor clients, responsible for driving revenue growth, strengthening customer relationships, and ensuring customer satisfaction. You will represent our company in the field—on job sites, in offices, at events, and throughout the community—while delivering unmatched industry expertise and service.

What You Will Do

Sales Development

  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities through networking, referrals, prospecting, and market research.
  • Develop and execute strategic sales plans aligned with company objectives and market conditions.

Client Relationship Management

  • Conduct regular in-person meetings with customers to understand needs, propose solutions, and strengthen business relationships.
  • Provide expert guidance tailored to the contractor's project requirements and challenges.
  • Maintain ongoing communication and follow-up to ensure loyalty and satisfaction.

Market & Product Intelligence

  • Stay informed about competitor offerings, industry trends, and customer expectations.
  • Maintain strong working knowledge of all company products, services, and new offerings.
  • Collaborate with internal partners to develop competitive pricing strategies.

Sales Presentations & Marketing

  • Prepare and deliver compelling presentations and demonstrations.
  • Share customer insights with internal teams to support continuous improvement.
  • Assist with merchandise selection for promotions and advertising efforts.

Customer Support

  • Nurture existing accounts and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Work cross-functionally with marketing, customer service, estimating, and other departments to support customer needs.

Sales Reporting & Performance

  • Achieve or exceed sales goals and quotas.
  • Maintain detailed records of sales activity, pipelines, customer interactions, and progress toward targets.
  • Provide regular performance updates and forecasts to management.
  • Conduct monthly department meetings to review results and strategy.
  • Review and analyze blueprints and TJI layouts as needed.
  • Provide input for budgets when required.

Industry Events & Travel

  • Travel frequently within the assigned territory to visit job sites and customer offices.
  • Attend trade shows, industry events, and contractor marketing programs to promote products and generate business.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of successful outside sales experience; contractor, construction, or building supply industry preferred.
  • Strong relationship-building and customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
  • Proven negotiation and closing skills.
  • Highly self-motivated, organized, and capable of managing multiple accounts and responsibilities.
  • Experience with product selection, marketing, and sales strategy.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and TJI layouts is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related software.
  • High school diploma required; bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, or related field preferred.
