The City of Hemet is currently accepting applications for the position of Public Safety Operator.

The position is full time, located in the Police Department, and assigned to work rotating day, evening, and night shifts, including weekends and holidays.

  • A current typing test certificate, dated within one year, MUST be attached to application at time of submission. Typing certificates must prove a typing speed of 40 net words per minute (WPM) with no more than five (5) errors. For this recruitment online or in-person proctored typing tests will be accepted.

THE POSITION
Under general supervision, receives incoming telephone calls and evaluates requests for Police, Fire, and emergency medical services in the Public Safety Communication Center; and performs related duties as assigned.

The Public Safety Operator is expected to act as the primary answering point for all 9-1-1 and non-emergency phone calls from within the City of Hemet. This position works under the direction of a Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor and provides support to Dispatch personnel.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • On an assigned shift, receives incoming telephone calls and evaluates requests for Police, Fire, and emergency medical services.
  • Elicits essential incident information from callers (requiring knowledge of the basic elements of crimes), and records information by typing on a computer keyboard into a dispatch format.
  • Determines the priority and number of Police, Fire, and/or medical aid units required to answer the dispatch in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Acts on requests from field units via Mobile Data Terminals for warrant and field checks, previous criminal history, the latest changes in vehicle codes, dispatch of tow trucks or coroners, or other similar special requests.
  • Answers routine inquiries and refers calls not requiring dispatches to appropriate departments and agencies.
  • Completes standard police crime reports on less serious crimes which do not require dispatches.
  • May perform matron duties

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of office methods and procedures.

Skills
Skill in the operation of computer keyboard at a rate of 40 wpm.

ABILITY
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; learn, apply, and explain rules, policies, and procedures; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; maintain the confidentiality of records and exercise independent judgment.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance as a Public Safety Operator.

  • A High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of experience in typing and general clerical work. Some experience providing information and assistance to the public is highly desirable.
  • The ability to speak and write Spanish is highly desirable.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License, and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Typing certificate of 40 Net Words Per Minute, with no more than five (5) errors;**

  • A current Typing Certificate (40 wpm net, no more than 5 errors)

  • Online typing test are accepted. All typing tests MUST be dated in the last year and MUST be 5 MINUTES in duration.

Special Requirements
Pass a background investigation including polygraph and psychological exam and a medical exam which may include drug testing, an audio test and vision exam; work rotating shifts including weekends and holidays. Employees must be able to work a varying schedule including weekends, weekdays, evenings, and holidays (hours and days are adjusted as needed by the department).

WORKING CONDITIONS
The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.

Working Conditions: Essentially all of the employee's time is spent in the Communications Center of the Police Department. The working environment may range from periods of high volume emergency and life-threatening calls for service to periods of little activity. Employees work on a rotating shift schedule that requires the availability to work nights, weekends and holidays.

Environmental Conditions: Office environment. CONTINUOUS working indoors, dust from paperwork. Work environment is both formal and informal, team orientated, having variable tasks, pace, and pressure. Work is performed indoors in the office and in meeting rooms.

Physical: Shall possess the physical, mental and emotional ability to perform the essential duties of the position without the threat of hazard to self or others. Employees require sufficient mobility to work in an office setting; stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; operate office equipment including use of a computer keyboard; ability to communicate verbally to exchange Work long hours from work station. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 25 pounds.

Vision: See in normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens, printed documents, and overhead presentations, and to operate assigned equipment.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction and wear headsets for prolonged periods of time.

Selection Process
All properly completed applications will be reviewed and the most appropriately qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the selection process. The selection process may include any combination of a written exercise, oral interview, and/or skills assessment to further evaluate job related experience and skills. Candidates who successfully complete the selection process will be placed on an eligibility list and will remain eligible for employment consideration for a one-year period.
