Position Summary

Develop, validate, evaluate and implement Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) compliant standard operating procedures, tests and methods in the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory (NPHL). Sets work schedules, performs quality control review, leads staff training, performs assay development, and leads trouble-shooting of on-going testing. Assists NPHL leadership in the planning and implementation of laboratory operations related to molecular testing. Performs testing and analysis of clinical and environmental samples using molecular and conventional microbiology techniques and collects, analyzes and reviews findings to provide recommendations relevant to the continuation and successful completion of projects; follows all safety and laboratory policies and procedures, maintain required documentation, maintain instrumentation and required resources, lead laboratory training, support research testing as needed, and maintain competency in all designated testing methods and participates in regulatory documentation, quality control, results reporting, developmental and educational support, communicating effectively with associated clients such as statewide hospitals, private clinical laboratories, and partnering agencies at the local, state and national levels; works with NPHL leadership and staff in the coordination of state and national programs that are relevant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) activities for emerging infectious diseases and biological preparedness; and supervises quality assurance, to include College of American Pathologists (CAP) and CLIA regulatory duties, proficiency testing program, and electronic laboratory reporting.

  • Individual will need to be able to work within a BSL3 high containment laboratory environment with Risk Group Level 3 pathogens as part of this job requirement.
  • Individual will be required to be on call.
  • Individual must be able to pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) risk assessment to have access to and work with federally regulated biological agents (Select Agents).
  • Individual must be able to pass a respirator fit test.

Preferred Education:

Master's degree or equivalent

More than 5 years' progressive experience in a relevant laboratory setting with some experience in molecular biology.
