Akumen is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior ServiceNow Developer with 5–8+ years of hands-on experience in designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise-level ServiceNow applications. In this role, you will lead the design and implementation of complex solutions that align with business objectives and technical requirements. You will take ownership of high-impact projects, mentor junior developers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, secure, and innovative ServiceNow applications.

The ideal candidate has advanced expertise in ServiceNow development, scripting, integrations, and architecture, along with a deep understanding of ServiceNow best practices and governance. They demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills, effectively engaging both technical and non-technical audiences, and consistently delivering solutions that meet or exceed customer expectations. This position requires a proactive problem-solver who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is committed to driving continuous improvement and innovation in mission-critical IT systems.

Responsibilities

The Sr. ServiceNow Developer position requires the candidate to take the lead in identifying, refining, organizing, documenting and implementing business processes for the Department of State. This individual will collaborate directly with the customer and other subject matter experts to develop or re-engineer processes.

Development and Customization:

  • Design, develop, and implement complex ServiceNow applications, including custom modules, workflows, forms, and dashboards.

  • Architect scalable solutions that align with organizational goals and ServiceNow best practices.

  • Write and optimize advanced client-side and server-side scripts using JavaScript and Glide APIs.

  • Develop reusable components and libraries to streamline development and improve maintainability.

Integrations and API Development:

  • Design and implement integrations between ServiceNow and external systems using REST and SOAP APIs, web services, and authentication mechanisms such as OAuth 2.0 or API keys.

  • Build and maintain complex integration workflows using ServiceNow IntegrationHub, Flow Designer, or custom scripts.

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Mentor and guide junior developers, fostering their technical growth and understanding of ServiceNow best practices.

  • Work closely with business leaders, project managers, and technical teams to gather requirements, define technical solutions, and ensure alignment with business objectives.

  • Provide technical expertise and recommendations during requirements workshops and design reviews.

  • Define and enforce ServiceNow development standards, best practices, and governance policies.

Testing and Optimization:

  • Oversee testing strategies, including system testing, regression testing, and user acceptance testing (UAT).

  • Optimize workflows, scripts, and integrations to improve system performance, reliability, and scalability.

  • Perform advanced testing and debugging analysis using tools like ServiceNow Debugger and Log Viewer to ensure functionality, performance, and reliability.

  • Monitor system health and performance using ServiceNow Performance Analytics and diagnostic tools.

Platform Maintenance and Upgrades:

  • Plan and execute ServiceNow upgrades, including testing and validating customizations and integrations for compatibility with new platform versions.

  • Lead migration efforts for legacy systems and ensure seamless transitions to ServiceNow.

Documentation and Knowledge Sharing:

  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, configuration guides, and process workflows.

  • Develop training materials and mentor junior developers to build team expertise.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, MIS, related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

  • 5–8+ years of hands-on experience in ServiceNow development, configuration, and architecture.

  • Prior experience in a federal government consulting environment.

Technical Expertise:

  • Proven ability to design, develop, and implement complex ServiceNow applications, including custom modules, workflows, forms, and dashboards.

  • Advanced proficiency in scripting languages such as JavaScript and Glide, with experience writing efficient and reusable client-side and server-side scripts.

  • Experience working with UI Builder and other recent ServiceNow technologies.

  • Hands-on experience designing and implementing integrations between ServiceNow and external systems using REST and SOAP APIs, web services, and authentication mechanisms.

  • Deep knowledge of multiple ServiceNow modules (e.g., CSM, ITSM, ITOM, PSDS, SecOps, GRC, CSM) and platform optimization techniques.

Leadership:

  • Proven ability to mentor and guide junior developers, fostering their technical growth and understanding of ServiceNow best practices.

  • Ability to serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for ServiceNow architecture, integrations, and platform optimization, providing technical guidance to team members.

  • Experience working closely with cross-functional teams, including developers, project managers, and business stakeholders, to ensure alignment on project goals and deliverables.

Certifications:

  • ServiceNow Certified System Administrator

Desired Qualifications

  • Certified Application Developer, Certified Implementation Specialist.

Clearance Requirement:

  • Must be a U.S.Citizen and have an Active Secret clearance or higher, verifiable in JPAS
