Job Title: Controller – Nonprofit

Location: Belleville, MI

Reports to: CEO

FLSA Status: Full Time Exempt

Guiding Harbor is a private, nonprofit organization serving Michigan's children and families since 1958.

Mission – Improving the quality of life for children and families.

Vision – Guiding Harbor will educate each person placed in our care, teaching the life skills necessary to make wise decisions and to become a productive member of society.

The Controller plays a crucial leadership role in the financial management and oversight of Guiding Harbor. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and providing strategic financial guidance to support the organization's mission and goals.

Key skills and qualifications

  • Experience: 7 – 10-year track record in financial management (nonprofit), including experience with fund accounting, grants, and audits, is crucial
  • Technical skills: Proficiency with accounting software, QuickBooks, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Leadership and communication: Strong leadership to lead and excellent written and verbal communication skills to report financial information clearly.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Financial Management

  2. Oversee the day-to-day financial operations of the nonprofit organization

  3. Develop and implement financial policies and procedures to ensure sound fiscal management
  4. Manage budgeting processes, working closely with department heads to develop and monitor budgets

  5. Accounting and Reporting

  6. Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using QuickBooks and Microsoft Suite/Excel

  7. Prepare and analyze financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements
  8. Generate regular financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, providing insights into the organization's financial health

  9. Compliance and Audit

  10. Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, tax regulations, and nonprofit reporting requirements

  11. Coordinate and facilitate external audits, working with auditors to provide necessary documentation and address any audit findings

  12. Grant Management

  13. Oversee the financial aspects of grant applications, including budgeting, reporting, and compliance

  14. Work closely with program managers to track and report on grant expenditures

  15. Financial Planning and Strategy

  16. Collaborate with executive leadership to develop long-term financial strategies aligned with the organization's mission and goals

  17. Provide financial analysis and insights to support decision-making processes

  18. Team Management

  19. Supervise and mentor finance and accounting staff, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment (as demonstrated by proven track record in effective supervision and mentorship)

  20. Conduct regular performance evaluations and professional development opportunities for finance and accounting team members

  21. Risk/Asset Management

  22. Identify and mitigate financial risks by implementing internal controls and best practices

  23. Develop and maintain a comprehensive risk/asset management strategy for the organization
  24. Conduct regular cycle counts, audits, and reconciliation on assets that ensure accuracy

  25. Relationship-Building

  26. Build and maintain strong relationships with banks, donors, auditors, and other key stakeholders

  27. Serve as a financial liaison between the organization and external partners

Requirements:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field

Experience

Track record of success in a senior finance role demonstrating effecting nonprofit financial management, including grant accounting and compliance

Skills and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, financial reporting, and compliance requirements

Excellent analytical and problem-solving and strategic thinking skills

Proficiency in financial software, QuickBooks, and Microsoft Excel

Excellent leadership and team management abilities

Effective communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to work collaboratively in a team and lead financial initiatives
