POSITION SUMMARY:

The Laboratory Coordinator will ensure compliance with the regulations of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA). Provides laboratory consultation and shall devote such time as required to assure clinic compliance with PPFA regulations. Ensures quality work continues for moderate and highly complex diagnostic procedures by processing, testing, documenting and reporting the results of hematology, chemistry, microbiology serology, immunology, and point of care for other labs, as they are implemented.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Works with the Director of Quality & Compliance, Sr. Director of Clinical Services, and the Laboratory Director/Consultant(s) to support and advance a standard for the delivery of health care that is characterized by excellence, privacy and respect for the patient, their health and their dignity.

2. Performs all job duties in compliance with DSHS, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) & COLA regulations and according to medical policies and procedures, as well as PPFA affiliate standards and protocols for all organization laboratories, including: Planned Parenthood San Antonio (PPSA) In-House Lab, and Planned Parenthood Cameron County (PPCC).

3. Ensures that testing systems performed in the laboratory provide quality laboratory services for all aspects of the test performance, which include pre-analytic and post-analytic phases of testing.

4. Ensures that the physical plant environment conditions of the laboratory are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees are protected from physical, chemical and biological hazards.

5. Ensures that test methodologies selected have the capability of providing the quality of results required for patient care.

6. Ensures quality work and laboratory functions continue for PPSA In-House Laboratory and PPCC by:

a. Performing required moderate and highly complex diagnostic laboratory tests.

b. Processing and testing amplified DNA probe specimens and reporting results.

c. Accurately evaluating cellular specimens.

d. Reporting test results to clinics.

e. Planning, developing, and implementing new policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for clinical testing procedures.

f. Making recommendations for areas of performance improvements.

g. Storing and disposing biological specimens in the proper manner.

h. Ensuring proper methods of infection control and sterilization are followed in the execution of all job duties.

i. Operating and maintaining testing equipment.

j. Sterilizing Laboratory testing equipment and keeps working area clean at all times.

k. Participating in laboratory proficiency testing per CLIA/COLA regulations/running quality control checks to ensure consistent quality testing is performed.

l. Archiving laboratory reports per CLIA/COLA regulations.

7. Ensures that the proficiency-testing reports are reviewed by the appropriate staff to evaluate the laboratory's performance and to identify any problem that requires corrective action.

8. Ensures that an approved corrective action plan is followed when proficiency-testing results are found to be unacceptable or unsatisfactory.

9. Ensures the establishment and maintenance of acceptable levels of analytical performance for each test system.

10. Performs laboratory audit and produces reports.

11. Ensures that all necessary remedial actions are taken and documented whenever significant deviations from the laboratory's established performance specifications are identified, and that client test results are reported only when the system is functioning properly.

12. Works closely with the Laboratory Director/Consultant in development and updates of the laboratory policy and procedure manuals and related forms.

13. Provides trainings as assigned, including but not limited to Lab training, Mandatory Reporting training, and others.

14. Provides on-site, telephone, and virtual consultation to laboratories as needed.

15. Serves on the Quality Assurance Committees as directed.

16. Performs other administrative duties as assigned.

17. Complies with the Workplace and Customer Service Standards, which area required part of the Organization's orientation, training and performance standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Bachelor's degree is preferred. Associate's degree is required. A degree in medical technology, chemistry, biological sciences, microbiology or related field is preferred. Certification as a Laboratory. Technician is highly desired.

Experience:

At least two years clinical laboratory testing experience working in a high-complexity laboratory is required. Previous experience in sexual and reproductive healthcare is preferred.

-   Highly knowledge able in the clinical testing of amplified DNA probe specimens.

-   Skilled in micro scope amplified equipment.

-   Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

-   Demonstrates excellent communication skills.

-   Excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills.

-   Ability to multi-task, exhibit excellent time management and project management skills.

-   Fully functional in computer software (MSOffice: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

-   Ability to proficiently utilize Athena EHR system.

-   Ability to make independent decisions that show sound, professional judgment.

-   Access to personal transportation, with ability to travel within the service delivery area regularly and outside the service delivery area occasionally.

-   Sensitive and competent regarding issues of multiculturalism.

-   Comfortable with issues of sexual and reproductive health.

-   Able and willing to work for an organization that supports a patient's right to make personal decisions regarding health care including their right to choose what option is best for them if faced with an unintended pregnancy.

-   Demonstrates a strong, personal commitment to the organization's position on customer service, internally and externally, for all clients, all services and all departments.
