Overview

A fast-growing, entrepreneurial company in the adventure, travel, and outdoor lifestyle industry is seeking a Controller to help build and mature its finance function. This is a hands-on role ideal for candidates ready to step up from an Assistant Controller position and take ownership of financial operations in a scaling environment.

The Controller will lead core accounting activities, monthly close processes, financial reporting, and cash flow management while working cross-functionally with operations, HR, supply chain, and leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management and Reporting

  • Independently lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
  • Manage general ledger activities, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements
  • Improve accuracy, consistency, and transparency in financial reporting
  • Oversee cash-flow planning and ensure a strong liquidity structure
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and ongoing financial analysis

Operational and Cross-Functional Support

  • Partner with operations on logistics, supply chain, inventory tracking, and vendor management
  • Support HR functions including payroll, benefits administration, and compliance
  • Assist leadership in developing scalable business processes and systems
  • Evaluate and implement improvements to financial, operational, and workflow systems

Systems and Tools

  • Manage all accounting processes within QuickBooks
  • Identify enhancements or additional systems needed as the company grows

Leadership and Culture

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and senior leaders
  • Bring a builders mindset by identifying opportunities and proposing solutions
  • Promote a culture of accountability, structure, and continuous improvement

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • US Citizen (required)
  • Must live in the Minneapolis area
  • Proven experience independently closing financial books
  • Strong proficiency with QuickBooks
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, monthly close cycles, and financial controls
  • Experience supporting HR functions including payroll and benefits
  • Experience partnering with operations on supply chain, logistics, vendor management, and inventory tracking
  • Demonstrated ability to build and improve processes
  • Growth-oriented mindset with desire to take on broader responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a growth-stage or entrepreneurial environment
  • Private Equity exposure (preferred but not required)
