Design Engineer – Manufacturing and Industrial Machinery
About AssetCool AssetCool is addressing one of the most pressing challenges in the global energy transition - grid congestion. By combining cutting‑edge grid robotics with breakthrough materials science, our technology transforms the physical performance of the grid in situ, increasing current‑carrying capacity by up to 30%, at just 5% of the cost and in a tenth of the time compared to conventional approaches.
In addition to enhancing capacity, our solutions tackle other grid constraints, including corrosion and electrical noise, and enable the collection of high‑value data to build accurate, predictive digital twins. This technology is proving transformative and is being adopted at an accelerating pace, with deployments across Canada, Slovenia, the UK, and the USA, as well as a strong global deployment pipeline.
AssetCool is a fast‑growing company with plans to more than double in size over the next six months. Backed by international investors from the US, mainland Europe, and the UK, we are proud to be one of the most innovative‑focused companies in the UK energy sector.
We’re looking for ambitious, mission‑driven individuals who are excited to work hard alongside their colleagues to build and deploy world‑leading technology that tackles some of the planet’s most urgent infrastructure challenges.
Role Overview We are seeking a Design Engineer to take technical ownership of our coating application module and the accelerated curing unit (CAM_ACU) platform.
This role sits at the intersection of mechanical design, manufacturing engineering, automation, and product thinking. You will be responsible not only for improving performance, reliability, and efficiency, but also for elevating ergonomics, usability, digital integration, and the overall look and feel of the system as it matures into a flagship AssetCool product.
You will work closely with AssetCool’s engineering, manufacturing partners, and commercial teams, and will have significant influence over how the CAM_ACU platform scales globally.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the mechanical and systems‑level design development of the CAM_ACU platform, improving robustness, manufacturability, and performance
Identify and implement design improvements to increase throughput, reduce waste, and improve coating consistency and yield
Improve ergonomics, operator interaction, access, maintenance, and safety across the CAM_ACU system
Drive design‑for‑manufacture and design‑for‑installation improvements to reduce build time, commissioning effort, and total cost of ownership
Introduce greater digitalisation into the platform, including sensors, data capture, process monitoring, and interfaces that support Industry 4.0 principles
Support the development of digital twins, diagnostics, and remote monitoring capabilities in collaboration with AssetCool’s wider technology roadmap
Work with automation and controls specialists to improve system integration, control logic, and data flows between modules
Contribute to the visual design, branding, and industrial aesthetics of the CAM_ACU to ensure it reflects AssetCool’s technology leadership
Produce and maintain high‑quality CAD models, drawings, technical documentation, and specifications
Support integration with customer cable handling systems and adapt designs for different factory layouts and regional requirements
Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners to iterate designs based on real‑world feedback and operational experience
Support trials, commissioning, and continuous improvement based on field and customer data
Required Skills & Experience
Degree (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline
Excellent experience in mechanical design of industrial equipment, machinery, or production systems
Proficiency in 3D CAD and engineering drawings (e.g. SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or similar)
Experience designing systems that interact with moving products, tensioned materials, or continuous processes
Understanding of manufacturing processes, tolerances, materials, and industrial safety considerations
Ability to take designs from concept through to manufacture, installation, and operation
Strong problem‑solving skills and a practical, hands‑on engineering mindset
Comfortable working in a fast‑moving, evolving environment with incomplete information
Preferred Skills & Experience
Experience with automation, sensors, PLC‑adjacent systems, or industrial data acquisition
Exposure to Industry 4.0 concepts such as digital twins, predictive maintenance, or connected machinery
Experience designing for ergonomics, usability, and operator‑centred industrial systems
Knowledge of coating, curing, thermal processes, or continuous production lines
Experience working with OEMs, system integrators, or industrial equipment suppliers
Interest in industrial design, branding, and visual coherence of engineered products
Experience supporting pilot systems transitioning into commercial products
