About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer to join our Platform Product Group, specifically within the Core Automation team. This team is dedicated to developing a trusted, scalable, and compliant platform that enhances operational efficiency and user experience across Coinbase. The core focus of this role is to design and implement Agentic AI systems that revolutionize customer support and compliance processes. The ideal candidate will be passionate about AI and blockchain technology, eager to solve complex problems, and motivated to build innovative solutions that deliver seamless, delightful customer experiences. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, data scientists, and compliance experts, to architect distributed systems, develop APIs, and set technical standards that support our automation vision. Your contributions will directly impact Coinbase's ability to scale operations, improve compliance, and enhance shareholder value, all while maintaining the highest standards of security and reliability.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with a proven track record of architecting scalable and impactful solutions.
• Strong proficiency in designing distributed systems and APIs.
• Experience with AI, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs) and Agentic AI, is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with measuring and improving LLM grounding, reducing hallucinations, and enhancing AI relevance.
• Background in customer support, compliance, or financial crimes domains is a plus.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to navigate ambiguity in complex technical environments.
• Strong communication skills and experience mentoring or leading technical teams.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop Agentic AI systems that power Coinbase's customer support and compliance workflows.
• Create orchestration frameworks, guardrails, and measurement techniques to ensure AI agents remain relevant, grounded, and customer-centric.
• Architect and implement distributed, scalable systems that support automation initiatives.
• Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to define strategic technical roadmaps aligned with company goals.
• Manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables, ensuring high-quality outputs.
• Mentor and guide team members on best practices in system design, coding standards, and AI integration.
• Develop foundational APIs and tools to facilitate integration with large language models and other AI components.
• Write high-quality, thoroughly tested code that meets the functional and security requirements of the platform.
