Founding AI Engineer

We're building core infrastructure for AI-native software development. The way code is written is changing faster than the tools that support it. Merget is creating foundational technology for this new era, solving hard problems at the intersection of distributed systems, machine learning, and developer experience. We're backed by IDrive Inc. and looking for a small, exceptional founding team to build this into reality.

The Role:

As a Founding AI Engineer, you'll design and build systems that sit at the intersection of AI and developer infrastructure. This means novel data structures, embedding systems, integrations with the modern AI coding stack, and infrastructure that needs to be both intelligent and performant. You'll have significant autonomy to shape technical direction, with the freedom to execute on any goal or idea without constraint.

Required:

• BS in Computer Science with a specialization in AI/ML and 1–3 years of industry experience, or MS in Machine Learning/AI (less than 1 year experience is fine)
• Strong systems programming background with demonstrated ability to optimize for performance, storage, and efficiency
• Experience with distributed systems, content-addressable storage, or related infrastructure
• Familiarity with ML/AI systems, particularly embedding models or LLM integration
• Track record of building developer-facing tools, IDE extensions, or language infrastructure

Preferred:

• You've studied or contributed to version control systems, collaborative editing, or CRDTs
• Experience with code understanding, semantic analysis, or codebase embedding models
• Background in building products that integrate with the AI coding ecosystem (Copilot, Cursor, Cline, agentic frameworks)
• You've shipped production systems that work with LLM APIs at scale
