Duties Summary

Performs various janitorial, groundskeeping, and unskilled or semi-skilled manual laboring tasks in the preparation and maintenance of facilities for sponsor use at the Ho'olulu Complex; represents the department in dealings with users of recreational and other public facilities; and performs other related duties as required.

There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Parks and Recreation - Ho'olulu Park Complex in Hilo..

Special Working Conditions: Shift work will vary. Works days and evenings to 11:30 p.m.

The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of Duties
  • Sets up risers, floor panels, seats, tables, stage equipment, platforms, basketball court, boxing or wrestling rings for events at the Hoolulu Complex.
  • Maintains athletic fields including liming and lining.
  • Sets up scoreboard controls, public address systems, and portable backstops.
  • Disassembles, transports, and stores equipment at termination of events.
  • Performs other heavy manual laboring tasks such as lifting, loading, and moving office furniture, equipment, tools, and other materials.
  • Performs simple maintenance of riser and seating facilities by cleaning, washing, scraping, wire brushing, oiling, and painting.
  • Performs janitorial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, wiping, vacuuming, polishing, and washing floors and walls.
  • Cares for and maintains grounds by mowing, watering, trimming, raking, weeding, and fertilizing lawn and planted areas.
  • Makes minor maintenance repairs to plumbing and electrical fixtures and woodwork, such as replacing toilet floats, faucets, burnt out light bulbs and fuses.
  • Makes repairs to doors, windows, chairs.
  • Operates maintenance equipment.
  • Assists tradesmen in the repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment.
  • May keep records of attendance, time, and electrical use.
  • Opens and secures facilities for sponsor.
  • Enforces regulations on facility use.
  • Oversees sponsor use of facilities.
  • Answers informational inquiries by sponsors.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to pick up and deliver supplies or equipment, etc.
Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • completion of the eighth grade, and
  • two (2) years of work experience involving janitorial, groundskeeping and/or related work utilizing a variety of hand tools and light motorized equipment, and
  • possession of a valid State of Hawai`i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at the time of hire).

Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Knowledge of: care and maintenance of grounds; use and care of equipment and tools.

Ability to: understand and follow oral and written instructions; operate hand and power equipment and tools; perform heavy lifting and moving; care for and maintain ground areas; clean and make simple maintenance repairs to buildings and equipment therein; learn pertinent regulations and enforce them with tact and courtesy.
