About Modern Family Finance

Modern Family Finance is a fee-only independent financial planning firm based in the San Francisco Bay Area that serves women and LGBTQ professionals — many of whom are tech employees or self-employed.

We combine comprehensive financial planning, tax planning and investment management to help our clients make confident, values-aligned decisions. Our clients tend to be thoughtful, ambitious mid-career professionals in their 30s-50s who want their financial life to reflect their personal and family values.

Our mission is simple:
provide tax-smart financial advice for modern families, delivered like a trusted friend.

We're a small, collaborative team who values Good Work, Good People, and Good Times. We take our work seriously but not ourselves, and we believe that good financial planning changes lives.

We're Hiring: Financial Planning Associate (Contract)
Opportunity:

We are in search of a remote Financial Planning Associate to support our growing firm. This is an ideal role for someone entering the financial planning industry who wants real-world, hands-on experience working directly with clients and an advisor.

This role is a great fit if you are early in your planning career, enjoy analytical and client-facing work, and want exposure to comprehensive financial planning in a values-driven firm. This is not a sales role — it's about learning the craft of financial planning and supporting great client outcomes.

  • Work with an amazing group of women and LGBTQ clients
  • Be a part of a startup firm who welcomes new and innovative ideas
  • Get face-to-face time with clients
  • Gain valuable mentorship on how to forge your own path in career and life

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the advisor to prepare client deliverables (PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Model financial plans in eMoney and conduct tax planning in Holistiplan
  • Support new client onboarding, including opening accounts, transferring assets, and developing the initial financial plan
  • Attend client meetings with the advisor to build client familiarity and planning context
  • Support advisor with post-meeting follow-up and implementation tasks
  • Conduct research on client questions and planning strategies
  • Identify opportunities to improve the client experience and help develop new deliverables and workflows

What Success Looks Like in This Role:

  • Client deliverables are accurate, clear, and well-prepared
  • The advisor can rely on you to follow through and support planning work end-to-end
  • You grow in confidence with financial planning tools, concepts, and client situations
  • Clients benefit from thoughtful preparation and smooth follow-up
  • You contribute ideas that improve efficiency and client experience over time

Qualifications:

  • 1+ years of financial planning industry experience is highly preferred. That said, we also welcome
    motivated career transitioners
who may be stepping into their first role in the field. If you're committed to learning and excited about growing in this profession, we'd love to hear from you.
  • Candidates working towards CFP certification are highly preferred
  • Experience with eMoney and Holistiplan is highly preferred
  • Be aligned with the mission of Modern Family Finance and enthusiastic about working with women and LGBTQ clients
  • Ability to self-start and thrive in an entrepreneurial environment

Hours and Compensation:

  • Flexible part-time contract role (30–40 hours per week)
  • Hourly rate of $25–$40 per hour, depending on experience
  • Hours are adjustable based on the needs of the firm, with flexibility to set your own schedule
  • Fully remote position; we are a fully virtual practice
  • Potential for hours to increase as the firm grows
  • Potential to grow into a full-time position and/or Associate Financial Planner role
  • Mentorship and opportunity to be part of a unique, mission-driven practice
