About The Role
The Data Science Director is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing complex data science projects, managing and mentoring a team of data scientists, and aligning data initiatives with organizational goals. This role involves leading the development, deployment, and governance of advanced AI and machine learning models, with a particular focus on generative AI healthcare solutions. The ideal candidate will possess strategic thinking, technical expertise, and leadership skills to drive data-driven decision-making across the organization. This position requires staying abreast of industry trends, ensuring ethical data use, and communicating technical insights effectively to non-technical stakeholders. The role also involves pioneering initiatives on model governance, model operations, and compliance with regulatory and security standards, all aimed at transforming healthcare operations and improving member experiences.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field
  • 10+ years of professional experience as a data scientist, preferably within healthcare but open to candidates from other industries with relevant expertise
  • Strong knowledge of big data technologies such as Hadoop and Spark
  • Proficiency in programming languages including Python and R
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow, Keras, or PyTorch
  • Deep understanding of statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms (e.g., SVM, neural networks, k-NN, Naive Bayes)
  • Familiarity with relational databases, data warehousing, and ETL processes
  • Experience with agentic workflows and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques
  • Proven ability to fine-tune models for specific tasks and datasets
  • Excellent data visualization skills using tools like Tableau or Power BI
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Databricks, Snowflake, or Azure AI Studio
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills
  • Preferred: PhD or additional industry experience in AI and data science

Responsibilities

  • Lead research and development efforts by staying current with advancements in AI and machine learning, applying these insights to enhance existing models and develop new methodologies
  • Oversee the deployment, monitoring, and governance of AI models in production environments, ensuring compliance with regulatory and security standards
  • Drive innovation by leading pilot projects to test and implement emerging AI technologies within the organization
  • Extract meaningful insights from complex datasets, identify patterns, and interpret data to support strategic decision-making
  • Design, develop, and train machine learning models using diverse algorithms, including deep learning and reinforcement learning techniques
  • Develop and implement agentic workflows utilizing AI agents to automate tasks and improve operational efficiencies
  • Employ retrieval-augmented generation patterns to enhance language models with external knowledge sources
  • Fine-tune pre-trained models to optimize their performance for specific healthcare applications
  • Perform data cleaning and preprocessing to ensure high-quality inputs for modeling activities
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, product managers, and business analysts, to integrate AI solutions into existing systems
  • Create comprehensive documentation and reports, clearly communicating complex findings to stakeholders at all levels
  • Mentor and guide junior data scientists, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation
  • Partner with business units to develop ML models that improve star ratings, reduce care gaps, and achieve other key business objectives
  • Manage analytical projects, assign tasks, and ensure timely delivery of insights and solutions
  • Identify opportunities for data-driven and technology-enabled solutions to address evolving business needs
