The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides direct and indirect patient care under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or physician. Assists patients with activities of daily living, provides personal care, and provides emotional support.
Responsibilities/Duties:
- Collects lab samples from patients, such as blood or urine.
- Performs EKG's as needed.
- Insertion and removal of peripheral IV.
- Assist RN or providers with exams and procedures as needed.
- Assists with fitting patients with splints and slings.
- Care of urinary catheter to include insertion and removal.
- Care of behavioral health patients.
- Assist in the care of patients in restraints.
- Assists with non-sterile wound cleaning and dressing.
- Assists with and/or performs ear irrigation procedure as delegated.
- Participate in active CODES and strokes procedures specific to the emergency department.
- Room patients from the waiting room.
- Securing the helipad.
- Provides care appropriate to condition, age, and ability, the psychosocial and physical needs of patients, including adult, pediatric, geriatric, and the general patient population within the CNA's scope of practice and hospital policy.
- Patient care is inclusive of bed bath, shower, tub bath, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning overbed table and bedside stand, straightening room, and any other general care as necessary throughout the shift.
- Provides general care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in the use of a bedpan or commode, and ambulating patients.
- Prepares patients for meals; services and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds patients if necessary. Distributes drinking water and snacks to patients as applicable.
- Answers patient's call lights, anticipates patients' needs, and makes regular rounds of assigned patients.
- Makes rounds at least once an hour when possible.
- Obtains and records vital signs, weight, intake-output, and reports to RN
- Observes patient's mental and physical conditions, reports any changes, complaints, or any abnormalities to RN throughout the shift.
- Enters and verifies patient data in the EHR system per current standards and policies.
- Maintains equipment, utility areas, and support areas in a clean and neat environment.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Restocks and orders supplies as needed.
- Schedules surgeries, diagnostic tests, and appointments as appropriate.
- Takes responsibility for and/or supports the Health Unit Coordinator as needed on the floor.
- Assists with patient admissions, discharge, and transfers.
- Orients new employees when necessary.
Education/Experience:
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred
- CNA or EMT, or LPN license required
- BLS certification required prior to providing independent patient care
- Previous patient care experience preferred
- Completion of Hayward Medical Center PCT training is required prior to providing individual patient care
