Job Summary:

The ideal candidate will provide financial leadership and operational excellence for Active Path Mental Health. This role is responsible for managing the organization's revenue collections, finance and accounting operations, internal controls, and compliance, with an emphasis on healthcare administration. The Controller ensures the integrity of financial reporting, optimizes revenue cycle processes, supports budgeting and forecasting, and partners with leadership to advance sustainable growth in alignment with our mission and values.

Essential Functions:

Financial Oversight:

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Provide monthly variance analysis and financial forecasts to leadership.
  • Lead the preparation of annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and revenue enhancement strategies to enhance organizational sustainability.
  • Develop internal controls and ensure accuracy, compliance, and timeliness of all financial transactions.
  • Work alongside external tax accountants to ensure all tax filing calculations and obligations are met.

Revenue Cycle Management

  • Supervise and manage Revenue Cycle Manager and Revenue Cycle Administrator to ensure all activities and processes are directed to optimize health insurance revenues and recovery rates, in accordance with overall corporate objectives
  • Build reporting and processes to monitor billing, collections, and reimbursement, identifying opportunities for improvement and working closely with operational teams to optimize processes while minimizing administrative burden.
  • Manage external billing company activities and relationships to ensure smooth operation of the revenue cycle function and effective billing outcomes.
  • Collaborate with external billing company to manage payor contracts and ensure all appropriate credentialling is obtained and maintained.

Healthcare Knowledge & Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations impacting healthcare finance, including Medicare/Medicaid rules and commercial payer requirements.
  • Monitor reimbursement trends, and healthcare regulatory updates impacting financial performance.
  • Maintain knowledge of healthcare cost accounting, provider productivity metrics, and clinic-level financial management.
  • Leadership & Collaboration:
  • Supervise and develop accounting/finance staff, fostering accuracy, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Partner with clinical and administrative leaders to support data-driven decision-making.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the executive team, offering insights on financial performance, risks, and opportunities.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of revenue collections and insurance payor management
  • GAAP and healthcare accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks,), with strong Excel skills.
  • Proficiency in EHR reporting systems (e.g., Tebra).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical thinker with problem-solving ability and attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in a growing, mission-driven organization with a collaborative culture.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Healthcare industry experience required; multi-site or outpatient mental health preferred.
  • Experience with revenue cycle management, healthcare compliance, and payer reimbursement structures.
