A nursing home security guard is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the facility by monitoring access points, patrolling resident areas, responding to emergencies, preventing unauthorized entry, and ensuring the well-being of residents, staff, and visitors, while being particularly sensitive to the needs of elderly individuals; this may include monitoring surveillance systems, conducting security checks, and assisting with resident safety concerns.
Key Responsibilities:
Access Control:
Monitor entrances and exits, checking identification of visitors and staff to ensure only authorized personnel are allowed entry.
- Manage visitor logs and procedures.
- Enforce facility access policies.
Patrols and Surveillance:
Regularly patrol the facility grounds, including resident rooms, common areas, and exterior perimeter.
- Monitor surveillance cameras and security systems to identify potential threats or incidents.
- Conduct security checks on doors, windows, and other vulnerable areas.
Emergency Response:
Respond promptly to emergency calls, including medical emergencies, fire alarms, and security breaches.
- Assist staff in evacuating residents during emergencies.
- Coordinate with local emergency services as needed.
Resident Safety:
Observe resident behavior and report any concerning changes or potential safety risks to nursing staff.
- Assist with preventing resident elopement by monitoring exits and high-risk areas.
- Be mindful of resident privacy and dignity while performing security duties.
Incident Reporting:
Document all security incidents, suspicious activity, and safety concerns in detailed reports.
- Investigate incidents and gather necessary information.
- Collaborate with staff to address security issues and prevent future incidents.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Physical Fitness:
Ability to walk long distances, stand for extended periods, and respond quickly to emergencies.
- Communication Skills:
Effective verbal and written communication to interact with residents, staff, and visitors.
- Observation Skills:
Keen attention to detail to identify potential security threats and unusual activity.
- De-escalation Techniques:
Ability to calmly address disruptive behavior and manage conflict situations.
- Security Knowledge:
Understanding of security protocols, surveillance systems, and basic safety procedures.
Sensitivity to Elderly Needs:
Awareness of the unique challenges and needs of elderly residents.
