Job Summary:

At D+H Construction, the Controller serves as a key member of the leadership team overseeing all financial management, accounting operations, and internal controls across the organization. This role ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, strong cash management, compliance with GAAP and construction industry standards, and provides financial insight to guide strategic decision-making.

The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in construction accounting, project-based financial management, and ERP systems, along with strong leadership skills to develop and mentor a high-performing accounting team. You'll achieve this by:

Essential Duties:

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee all day-to-day accounting functions, including A/R, A/P, payroll, job cost, and general ledger
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Manage job cost reporting, work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, and project profitability analyses
  • Partner with operations leadership to review project budgets, cost tracking, and forecasting
  • Prepare and present financial reports and KPIs to senior management and ownership

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and prepare rolling forecasts
  • Analyze variances between actual results and budgets, providing actionable recommendations to improve profitability
  • Monitor cash flow and working capital to ensure adequate liquidity for ongoing projects

Compliance, Controls & Systems

  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies to safeguard company assets
  • Manage annual financial audits, tax filings, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Oversee lien releases, subcontractor compliance, and insurance certificate tracking
  • Administer and optimize accounting/ERP software (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, CMiC, or similar)

Leadership & Development

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering professional development and accountability
  • Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and executives to ensure financial accuracy and transparency
  • Support organizational growth through process improvements and technology enhancements

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a construction or general contracting environment
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or CMA strongly preferred
  • Proven experience managing accounting operations for a company in the $50M–$200M revenue range
  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, job cost systems, WIP, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
  • Proficiency in ERP/accounting systems such as Sage 300 CRE (Timberline), Viewpoint, or CMiC.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and leadership skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, project-driven environment

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a desk and using a computer
  • Visual acuity to read documents and use computer screens accurately
  • Manual dexterity for operating office equipment and handling documents
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 15 pounds occasionally (e.g., files, office supplies)
  • Occasional walking and climbing stairs during site visits; must be able to navigate construction environments safely

Must be local to the San Francisco Bay Area and able to visit job sites on a regular basis. Familiarity with local construction markets and contractors is a plus. No relocation assistance will be offered. This position does not offer remote or work from home opportunities.
