The City of Converse is looking for a skilled, hands-on Assistant Mechanic to help keep our fleet safe, reliable, and mission-ready. What You'll DoUnder the direction of and reporting to the City Mechanic and/or the Director of Public Works, the Assistant Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and inspection of automotive and construction equipment to determine the appropriate corrective action. He or she performs or assists in major and minor maintenance and repair of city fleet equipment, including but not limited to major engine overhauls. The Assistant Mechanic performs tune-ups, alignments, adjustments, and minor and major brake overhauls; replaces and repairs transmissions and differentials; lubricates moving parts; and packs wheel bearings and universal joints. He or she operates and maintains automotive shop equipment and estimates the cost of repairs to motor vehicles and construction equipment. He or she efficiently and effectively utilizes supplies, equipment, and resources and may be called on to assist in Emergency Management duties. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Job Duties
The Assistant Mechanic must be able to perform the following essential job duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Maintain, inspect, repair, and replace worn or broken equipment and vehicle parts. Perform regular/routine preventative maintenance tasks and diagnostic tests as appropriate.
- Perform repair work on engine systems, hydraulic systems, alternators, radiators, starters, motors, brakes, pumps, distributors, carburetors, and transmissions. Work on air conditioning, heating, and electrical systems.
- Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.
- Review work orders and complete paperwork necessary to record all vehicle repairs and services.
- Install and repair accessories, such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
- Maintain a clean, safe work area.
- Test-drive and deliver vehicles as necessary.
- Process Information — Compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying information or data.
- Organizing, Planning, and Prioritizing Work — Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
- Documenting/Recording Information — Entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining information in written or electronic form.
- Work in various outdoor conditions as needed, including hot, cold, and wet environments, as well as enclosed spaces.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and others (internally and externally) in order to provide, exchange, or verify information, answer inquiries, address issues, or resolve and/or report problems or complaints.
- Use good judgment and make good decisions in matters related to the job.
- Follow City and Department policies and procedures and the instructions of supervisors.
- Assist others; be helpful, cooperative, and courteous, and demonstrate a good attitude in all dealings with the public, co-workers, and others.
- Discuss matters affecting the job or performance with his or her immediate supervisor.
- Punctual, regular, on-site, in-person attendance is required for the job.

Requirements
Education and Basic Requirements:
The Assistant Mechanic must meet the following minimum requirements.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Two (2) years' experience as a mechanic.
- Possession of a valid Texas Class C driver license. Have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
- Satisfactory results of background and pre-employment screening checks including physical exam.
- Valid Texas Class B driver license preferred, and may be required within six (6) months of notice.
Required Knowledge:
The Assistant Mechanic must have the following knowledge, skills and/or abilities.
Knowledge
- Repair principles, practices, and techniques for vehicles and equipment used in the Department.
- Machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance used in the repair of vehicles, equipment and components.
- State and federal regulations governing vehicle safety standards, vehicle inspection, occupational hazards, and safety precautions in a vehicle repair shop environment.
- Safety procedures and practices.
Required Skills:
- Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
- Performing computerized diagnostic tests and calibrations on vehicle components and equipment.
- Identifying maintenance needs and mechanical problems, and taking corrective actions.
- Inspecting, diagnosing and repairing vehicles and equipment.
- Safely using power and hand tools, chemicals, lubricants, and cleaning compounds.
- Reading and interpreting technical manuals and specifications.
- Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of business and specialized software.
- Following verbal and written instructions, procedures and safe work practices.
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers and others.
- Time management skills and the ability to work on and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Required Abilities:

- Safely and skillfully drive and operate vehicles, equipment, and hand tools involved in maintenance and repair work.

- Understand, learn and communicate information about the job.
- When required, report for duty after normal business hours and during emergencies, and be on standby as required.
Physical and Mental Requirements
In order to successfully achieve the goals of the City, the City Mechanic must meet the following physical and mental requirements with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Have the ability to maintain balance, walk, sit, stoop, bend, kneel, stand, reach, grasp, and stretch, climb and descend ladders and stairs, push and pull, and remain upright for extended periods of time.
- Tolerate exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, dust, fumes, noise, insects, plants, snakes and other wild life.
- Have the ability to hear and speak by means of radio, ability to exhibit rapid, unassisted movement in emergency situations.
- Have good motor coordination skills; for example, must be able to coordinate eyes, hands, fingers and feet rapidly and accurately in order to handle precise movements when operating vehicles and equipment.
