General Description

The Research Associate (Non-Tenure Track) is a full-time research-focused position that supports ongoing scholarly, scientific, or laboratory projects within the department of Genetic Medicine. The role involves conducting independent and collaborative research under the supervision of a principal investigator (PI) or senior faculty member. This position is not part of the tenure-track faculty pathway.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and support research activities, including experimental design, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation of results.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of research projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory, institutional, and funding requirements.
  • Prepare research materials such as protocols, reports, abstracts, posters, and manuscripts for publication or presentation.
  • Assist with grant applications, including literature reviews, preliminary data preparation, and research plan development.
  • Maintain research records, laboratory documentation, and project databases with accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Collaborate with faculty, postdocs, staff, and students; provide training or technical guidance as needed.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring adherence to safety standards and best practices.
  • Participate in research meetings, seminars, and department activities.

  • Contribute to the development of new research methods, procedures, or technologies relevant to project goals.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

PhD in Human Genetics or relevant field

3-4 years of extensive postdoctoral research experience, which demonstrates independent project management, high-level technical or methodoligical expertise and strong productivity

Solid record of peer-reviewed publications usually first author papers, and evidence of ongoing scholarly projects.

Intermidiate field-specific skills in lab techniques, computational/statistical analysis and engineering design/testing

Grant funding experience

Strong communication skills - writing and presentation skills, and ability to communicate effectively with collaborators and interdisciplinary teams

Other preferred skills such as experience in teaching or mentoring, supervising lab personnel and familiarity with lab operations and equipment management

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
