Position Summary
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) supports the daily clinical and administrative operations of a busy cardiothoracic surgery practice. This role ensures high-quality patient care by assisting providers with examinations, diagnostic procedures, clinical documentation, and patient education. The CMA functions as a key member of the multidisciplinary care team, maintaining efficiency, safety, and compassion in all patient interactions.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support
- Prepare exam rooms, surgical consult rooms, and equipment for patient visits.
- Obtain and document vital signs, medical history, medication lists, allergies, and reason for visit.
- Perform EKGs, pulse oximetry, spirometry, and other approved diagnostic tests.
- Assist providers with in-office procedures such as wound checks, suture/staple removal, dressing changes, and post-operative assessments.
- Prepare surgical clearance materials and ensure all diagnostic results needed for surgical evaluation are available.
- Accurately enter information into the electronic medical record (EMR) and maintain documentation in compliance with clinic and regulatory standards.
- Follow infection control protocols and maintain a clean, safe clinical environment.
Patient Care & Communication
- Provide patient education regarding pre-operative and post-operative instructions, medication management, wound care, and follow-up recommendations.
- Communicate test results and provider recommendations to patients as directed.
- Coordinate referrals, imaging, and diagnostic testing such as CT scans, ultrasounds, echocardiograms, and labs.
- Support patients and families with navigating the surgical process, including scheduling and preparation expectations.
Administrative Duties
- Answer phone calls, return patient messages, and assist with triage under provider direction.
- Manage incoming faxes, refill requests, documentation uploads, and routing to providers.
- Schedule appointments and follow-up visits; ensure appropriate visit types and time allotments.
- Maintain supply inventory and request necessary clinical materials.
- Assist with prior authorizations and insurance-related documentation as needed.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), RMA, or CCMA credential from an approved organization.
- Current BLS certification.
- Experience in a surgical, cardiology, or specialty practice preferred.
- Strong EMR skills (Epic, Cerner, or similar).
- Excellent communication, patient-service, and organizational skills.
- Ability to multitask, work in a fast-paced environment, and collaborate well within a care team.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and assist patients for extended periods.
- Ability to lift or move up to 25–30 pounds as needed.
- Manual dexterity to perform clinical procedures and operate equipment.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $ $17.00 per hour
Expected hours: 36 per week
