Mechanic

MECHANIC (OnCall Waste)

The Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining waste collection vehicles and related equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations. This role supports daily route readiness and minimizes vehicle downtime through preventative maintenance and timely repairs.

DUTIES & RESPONSBILITIES:

· Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on refuse trucks, portable restroom trucks, roll-off trucks, compactors, containers, and related equipment

· Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues

· Repair and maintain engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, and exhaust systems

· Service hydraulic systems including pumps, cylinders, hoses, and valves

· Perform welding and fabrication as needed on trucks and containers

· Conduct DOT inspections and ensure vehicles meet safety and regulatory standards

· Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records

· Respond to road calls and emergency breakdowns as required

· Operate diagnostic tools, hand tools, and shop equipment safely

· Keep maintenance shop clean, organized, and compliant with safety policies

· Communicate effectively with supervisors regarding vehicle status and repair timelines

REQUIRED SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

· High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school preferred

· 2–5 years of experience as a heavy-duty or diesel mechanic (waste industry experience preferred)

· Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and heavy equipment

· Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics

· Valid driver's license; CDL preferred or ability to obtain

· Welding experience a plus

· Must be able to work independently and as part of a team

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

· Ability to lift up to 75 lbs

· Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and work in confined spaces for extended periods

· Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

Work Schedule:

· Full-time; may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and on-call hours

Pay: $ $35.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
