Housekeeper Position Summary
The Housekeeper is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment throughout the community to support resident comfort, health, and satisfaction. Reporting to the Housekeeping Manager, this role performs routine, scheduled, and as-needed cleaning of resident apartments, common areas, dining spaces, offices, and healthcare units in accordance with established cleaning schedules, infection control standards, and safety protocols.
The Housekeeper plays an essential role in infection prevention and overall community presentation by sanitizing high-touch surfaces, properly handling waste, and using approved cleaning products and equipment. This position requires attention to detail, respect for resident privacy, and the ability to respond promptly and courteously to housekeeping requests and urgent needs such as spills, accidents, or outbreak-related cleaning.
The role requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, follow written and verbal instructions, and adapt to changing priorities. The Housekeeper must demonstrate professionalism, a service-oriented attitude, and a genuine interest in supporting a senior population while working flexible schedules, including weekends or holidays as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED preferred, but not required
- Prior housekeeping, janitorial, environmental services, or custodial experience preferred
- Experience in senior living, skilled nursing, assisted living, memory care, healthcare, hospitality, or commercial environments strongly preferred
- Familiarity with cleaning chemicals, floor care equipment, and infection control practices preferred
- Prior experience working with older adults or individuals with disabilities is a plus
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of proper cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection techniques
- Understanding of infection control standards and safe handling of cleaning chemicals and waste
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established schedules and procedures
- Ability to recognize and report safety hazards, maintenance concerns, or resident-related observations
- Effective verbal communication skills and ability to interact respectfully with residents, families, staff, and visitors
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism at all times
- Strong time-management and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a team environment
- Willingness and ability to respond to urgent housekeeping needs and changing priorities
Physical and Work Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and perform repetitive motions throughout the shift
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull supplies and equipment (generally up to 50 pounds, occasionally more with assistance)
- Ability to work indoors across various environments including resident apartments, healthcare units, offices, dining areas, and restrooms
- Ability to tolerate exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, allergens, and typical healthcare-related conditions while using proper PPE
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, evenings, or extended hours as required
