DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Mechanic Assistant is responsible for performing journey-level maintenance and repair to City vehicle fleet. Fields of specialization should include engines, tires, oil and batteries. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Fleet Services Manager although most diagnostic and repair work is completed with considerable independence. Some Mechanics may exercise functional supervision over other Mechanics, while in progress and upon completion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This list is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all functions, responsibilities, skills, and abilities. Additional functions and requirements may be assigned by supervisors as deemed appropriate.
Performs preventative maintenance on City vehicles.
Evaluates maintenance, servicing and repair needs and establishes repair priorities.
Inspects, and assess tire thread levels, wear patterns, valve quality and overall tire health on light duty vehicles.
Installs new tires.
Performs balancing and rotating of tires.
Seal punctures or tears in tires or perform miscellaneous repairs in a timely manner, following establishing work procedures.
Use mechanic equipment to unbolt and remove tires, examine and identify issues and reattach wheels to the vehicle correctly and safely.
Contribute to the upkeep and tidiness of equipment, service bays, storage areas, and break areas as needed.
Perform oil changes and minor repair work on vehicles and trucks as needed.
Performs battery checks and replacement.
Completes maintenance work order forms and records of labor and parts used.
Complete work orders.
Responds to emergency road calls, as necessary.
Assists other mechanics with heavy duty work as needed consisting of hydraulic hoses, radiators, sensors, electrical issues, and other repairs that may arise.
Observes all safety regulations and communicates unsafe conditions or accidents/ injuries to supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Additional Requirements:
This classification requires the use of City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record.
Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon assignment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED & EXERCISED
- General supervision is received from the Shop Lead Mechanic.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
- Automotive parts such as engines, tires, oil and batteries.
Ability to:
Use and care for hand and power tools used in all phases of tire repair and vehicle/truck maintenance.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
Complete forms to record or report information.
Communicate effectively in the English language orally and in writing.
Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects to repair equipment.
Read, understand, and apply information from charts, graphs, and manuals.
Manipulate tools in areas of limited space, such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, or other similar tools.
Ability to excel in a physically challenging environment.
Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time and lift up to 75 pounds regularly without strain.
Adapt tools and materials to special problems.
Work cooperatively with others.
Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Education & Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
One (1) year automotive experience.
Licenses, Certificates & Registrations:
- Valid Texas Driver's License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is frequently required to stand; bend or stoop repeatedly; reach with hands and arms; and walk on rocky surfaces. The employee must regularly be able to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, and moving vehicle traffic. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
