ABOUT THIS POSITIONThe Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services.
The City of Phoenix is seeking dedicated employees with extensive journey-level experience in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and remodeling of buildings, offices, houses, and other facilities. Assignments involve numerous trades and skills, such as rough carpentry, cabinet making, plumbing, routine electrical or welding work, roofing, painting, drywall finishing, concrete/masonry work, and locksmithing.
The Public Works Department is currently looking for two Building Maintenance Workers:
Building Maintenance Worker*U2 and Building Maintenance Worker*Plumber
Responsibilities include:
- Extensive journey level experience in maintenance, repair, and alteration of plumbing systems, remodeling of offices, houses, and other facilities.
- Numerous trades and skills such as plumbing, rough carpentry, drywall repairs, and painting.
- Determining appropriate work methods, tools, and materials used for most assignments.
- Work is performed independently or in teams and could involve occasionally serving as a crew leader over other Building Maintenance Workers for specified projects.
- Knowledge of and skilled in:
- Installation and repair of plumbing systems and fixtures.
- Domestic water supply systems, pumps and piping.
- Proficiency in installing, repairing and maintaining various types of pipes for water, gas and waste systems.
- Understanding local plumbing codes and regulations to ensure installations and repairs are safe and up to standard.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with clients and provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to act swiftly in emergencies, such as burst pipes or severe leaks to mitigate damage.
Building Maintenance Worker*U2
Pay Range: $24.93 to $38.68 per hour.
Hiring Range: $24.93 to $31.82 per hour.
Building Maintenance Worker*Plumber
Pay Range: $27.49 to $40.61 per hour.
Hiring Range: $27.49 to $35.08 per hour.
Pay Range Explanation:
- Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
- Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 147. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.
- Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
- Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
- Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
- When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSBuilding Maintenance Worker*U2
- Three years of skilled level experience in building maintenance and repair work, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades, AND Completion of an acceptable apprenticeship program.
- OR Six years of trades experience, three of which are at the skilled level, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Building Maintenance Worker*Plumber
- Three years of skilled level experience in building maintenance and repair work, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades
- AND Completion of an acceptable apprenticeship program.
- OR Six years of trades experience, three of which are at the skilled level, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades.
- Backflow Certification (or similar plumbing certification) is required at time of placement in the assignment.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate's suitability for the job.

- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
