As the Engineering/Development Manager, you'll be responsible not just for writing excellent code, but for driving the direction of the work. You'll help define what we're building, how we build it, and how we support each other along the way.

About Hello World

Our mission at Hello World is to impact the evolution of technology while creating an enjoyable and equitable workplace. We are a software development agency with a focus on CMS, LMS, and enterprise-level applications. We were created to focus solely on development and provide a haven for other developers. We are often tapped by other agencies to do the heavy lifting or development that they can't or don't want to do. By focusing on development, we've ensured that we don't get lost in the things we aren't good at and excel at what we are.

Description

The Role

We start every engagement part-time and contract-based — not because we don't trust you, but to make sure it's a good fit on both sides. (It usually is.) From there, your role and hours grow fast.

As the Engineering/Development Manager, you'll be responsible not just for writing excellent code, but for driving the direction of the work. You'll help define what we're building, how we build it, and how we support each other along the way.

What you'll do:

  • Lead a small team of developers — providing mentorship, performance feedback, and career development support
  • Translate product ideas into clear, actionable technical plans and tickets
  • Architect scalable, maintainable solutions (especially in Drupal and Laravel) and guide implementation across multiple projects
  • Write clean, thoughtful PHP and JavaScript (React, Vue, or vanilla) while setting a high technical standard for the team
  • Review code, manage deployments, and remove blockers to keep projects moving smoothly
  • Partner with project managers and leadership to plan resourcing, refine processes, and uphold delivery quality
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive engineering culture focused on growth, communication, and craftsmanship

What You Bring

  • 6+ years of production-level web development experience, with strong hands-on PHP expertise
  • Solid experience with Drupal 9/10/11 — bonus points if you can show us live sites you've launched
  • Confident in Laravel, beyond tutorials — you've made architectural decisions and guided others on best practices
  • Deep understanding of RESTful APIs, modern development workflows, and performance optimization
  • Excellent Git habits that make collaborating and reviewing code smooth and efficient
  • Experience scoping, assigning, and managing work in tools like Jira or similar project management platforms
  • Ability to lead, work independently, and collaborate effectively — knowing when to unblock your team or ask for input
  • Curiosity and care — you approach problems thoughtfully and solve the right ones the right way
  • Strong communication skills — leaving helpful comments, collaborating with project managers, and keeping clients informed and confident

Our Environment

  • macOS or Linux; your choice
  • Docker/Lando for consistent builds
  • Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub
  • PP Radio Grotesk in the UI of documentation or Manrope as a google font, Courier for commit messages (we have this COO that notices the details)

  • No micromanagement. We hire for skill and trust you to use it
  • A team that has each other's back
