About The Role The ICO is seeking a highly skilled Principal Data Scientist to join its Analytics and AI team. This full-time or part-time position offers a unique opportunity to lead innovative data science initiatives that directly impact the organization’s strategic objectives. As a key member of the team, you will collaborate closely with stakeholders across various departments to identify and prioritize AI opportunities that generate tangible value while maintaining high standards of explainability, responsibility, and ethical integrity. Your expertise will help embed advanced analytics and AI solutions into the ICO’s operational workflows, supporting the organization’s mission to uphold information rights and data privacy. Additionally, you will play a vital role in fostering data literacy within the organization through the ICO Data Academy, empowering colleagues with the skills and knowledge needed to leverage data effectively. This role is ideal for a strategic thinker with a passion for ethical AI development, innovation, and organizational impact.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience in data science, AI, and analytics, demonstrated through academic qualifications or extensive professional practice. Proficiency in open‑source programming languages such as Python, along with hands‑on experience in building machine learning models and large language models, is essential. Familiarity with cloud computing platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure, and the ability to utilize cloud services to develop scalable AI solutions are critical. Candidates should have a solid understanding of data privacy, governance frameworks, and ethical considerations related to AI deployment. Experience in supporting data science capability building within teams and organizations is highly desirable. A comprehensive knowledge of data analysis techniques, including exploratory data analysis, statistics, NLP, and generative AI, will enable success in this role. Strong communication skills, creative problem‑solving abilities, and the capacity to simplify complex technical concepts for non‑technical audiences are also required.
Responsibilities
Lead the development, testing, and deployment of AI and analytics products that align with ICO’s strategic objectives, ensuring outputs are explainable, responsible, and effectively integrated within the organization.
Identify, define, and prioritize new AI opportunities by engaging with stakeholders to understand their challenges and needs, translating these insights into practical, innovative solutions.
Contribute to frameworks and mechanisms that ensure AI solutions are built responsibly, with considerations for ethics, explainability, and model performance being thoroughly monitored and maintained.
Collaborate with product delivery teams, including data analysts, engineers, and product owners, to ensure solutions meet business requirements and are embedded seamlessly into operational workflows.
Support the ICO Data Academy by promoting data literacy initiatives, training colleagues, and fostering a data‑driven culture across the organization.
Stay informed about emerging trends and advancements in data analytics and AI, assessing their potential application within the ICO to drive innovation and organizational impact.
Develop and implement quality metrics for AI and analytics solutions, ensuring continuous improvement and adherence to governance standards.
