The ICO is seeking a highly skilled Principal Data Scientist to join its Analytics and AI team. This full-time role offers an exciting opportunity to lead the development and delivery of advanced AI and analytics solutions that support the organization's strategic objectives. As a key player within the team, you will work closely with internal stakeholders, data analysts, engineers, and product owners to identify AI opportunities and translate them into impactful, ethical, and explainable solutions. Your expertise will ensure that AI applications are responsibly embedded within the organization, aligning with data privacy, ethics, and governance standards. You will also contribute to the ICO Data Academy, enhancing data literacy across the organization and fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making. This role offers a hybrid working environment, with flexible options to work remotely or from one of our offices in Wilmslow, London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, or Belfast, with occasional travel or office attendance as required. Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience in data science and AI, with a strong technical background and a proven track record of delivering AI solutions within complex organizational environments. Proficiency in open-source programming languages such as Python, along with experience in building machine learning models and large language models, is essential. Knowledge of cloud platforms, particularly Microsoft Azure, and familiarity with cloud services and deployment is required. Candidates should have a solid understanding of data analysis, statistics, NLP, generative AI, and visualization techniques. Experience working within governance frameworks that promote ethical AI development and deployment is highly desirable. A deep understanding of data protection regulations, privacy considerations, and responsible AI practices is also necessary. The ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and support capability building initiatives, such as data literacy programs, will be critical to success in this role. Responsibilities
Lead the design, development, and testing of AI and analytics products that deliver value aligned with ICO’s strategic goals, ensuring outputs are transparent, explainable, and ethically responsible. Identify, define, and prioritize new AI opportunities by collaborating with stakeholders to understand their challenges and needs, translating these insights into practical technical solutions. Contribute to frameworks and mechanisms that ensure AI solutions are built responsibly, with ongoing monitoring of model performance, ethics, and explainability. Partner with product delivery teams to maintain stakeholder engagement throughout the development lifecycle, ensuring successful embedding and adoption of AI solutions into operational workflows. Collaborate with data analysts, engineers, and product owners to ensure solutions meet business requirements and are integrated effectively within existing systems. Support the ICO Data Academy by developing initiatives that enhance data literacy and promote best practices in data analysis and AI across the organization. Stay informed on emerging trends, techniques, and innovations in data analytics and AI, assessing their potential application to drive organizational impact and value. Implement quality metrics and monitoring strategies to evaluate the performance, fairness, and ethical compliance of AI solutions. Benefits
