About The Role We are seeking a skilled and motivated Data Scientist to join our Subsurface team at our Abingdon office in Oxfordshire. This is a unique opportunity to leverage advanced data science techniques to address geological and geospatial challenges, unlocking insights from complex subsurface data. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing data-driven solutions that enhance our understanding of subsurface formations. This position offers the chance to work at the forefront of energy technology, applying innovative methods such as natural language processing, foundation models, and geospatial analysis to real‑world problems. The role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, utilizing cloud platforms and modern data management tools to deliver scalable and secure solutions that support our global operations.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess an honors degree (2:1 or above) in data science, computer science, geosciences, or a related field, along with a minimum of two years of relevant work experience. Candidates should demonstrate a strong foundation in data science principles, programming, and geospatial analysis, with a keen interest in applying these skills within the energy industry context. A solid understanding of secure coding practices and version control systems is essential, along with familiarity with cloud computing platforms such as AWS and Azure. Additionally, experience working with large datasets, machine learning frameworks, and geospatial libraries will be highly advantageous.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain robust Python pipelines for data manipulation, integrating NLP techniques and foundation models to enhance data processing workflows.
Apply geospatial libraries and techniques, such as GeoPandas, Shapely, and GDAL, to analyze and interpret subsurface geological datasets.
Implement secure coding practices to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of data and workflows.
Manage version control and collaborative development using Git, facilitating seamless teamwork and code review processes.
Utilize cloud platforms like AWS and Azure to scale data workflows, manage infrastructure, and optimize performance.
Design and optimize spatial databases, primarily using PostgreSQL/PostGIS for efficient management of geospatial data.
Work with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Scikit‑learn to develop, train, and evaluate supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms.
Preprocess large datasets, ensuring data quality and preparing data for analysis and modeling.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to translate complex geological and geospatial data into actionable insights.
Stay updated with emerging trends in data science, geospatial analysis, and energy industry developments, integrating innovative approaches into projects.
