Job Purpose Act as the focal point for CDM compliance within the design teams and provide CDM expertise to the CPP and other directorates on notifiable projects until regulations change. You will work across UKPN’s OHL and cable diversions portfolio, collate stakeholder requirements, and ensure relevant information is available throughout the design process.
Key Responsibilities
Provide CDM guidance and act as the point of reference on adherence to CDM regulations and the responsibilities of the Principal Designer.
Contribute to the production of technical, commercial and contractual documents for procurement of engineering products, ensuring compliance with internal governance procedures.
Sourcing survey information from specialist contractors.
Notify HSE of all notifiable projects.
Monitor P6 for progress reports and maintain communication with all parties.
Summarise action points and learning opportunities from P6 exception reports, design reviews and Requirements & Validation events.
Work independently with minimal supervision; self‑motivated and proactive.
Attend site meetings at UKPN and customer sites; travel and work across multiple office locations as required.
Communicate effectively both written and verbally, and learn new IT systems and processes.
Principal Accountabilities
Deliver health, safety, environmental and CDM advice to the design team.
Track and report on surveys, reports, investigations and plant/equipment specifications to maximise value engineering.
Monitor design progress and highlight resource constraints.
Ensure design risk assessments (HEML) are carried out and compliant with statutory regulations.
Arrange and hold regular design, Value Engineering and HEML reviews; report on progress to ensure financial targets are met.
Coordinate CDM compliance for all notifiable projects and maintain statutory notices.
Compile and submit statutory notices for all notifiable projects within the team.
Produce monthly design dashboards detailing portfolio views, workloads, delivery programmes, efficiencies and performance issues.
Provide accurate and current data for civil/electrical design package delivery within agreed programmes.
Nature and Scope
Receive projects from team leaders/Design Manager and facilitate coordination of designers to agree scope and deliverables.
Advise the Design Lead to fulfil Principal Designer responsibilities and provide professional advice.
Coordinate with design coordinators who manage external resources.
Support the Design Manager and Technical Leads for closure of actions.
Collaborate with technical leads to ensure designs follow departmental procedures.
Work as a team player within a dedicated design team.
Deliver site meetings and travel as required.
Demonstrate strong written, spoken and visual management skills.
Communicate with senior colleagues and customers; explain complex programming issues to junior staff.
Support the team to produce efficient designs meeting standards and regulatory approvals.
Serve as focal point for CDM within the team and ensure compliance with current regulations.
Ensure health and safety files and as-built drawings are completed and filed within programmed time.
Capture lessons learned and integrate them back into standards and processes.
Skill Qualifications and Experience
Track record in design coordination within mainstream engineering construction, including electrical networks.
Knowledge of CDM 2015.
Hold or be working toward NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
Technical qualifications at HNC/HND or equivalent experience.
Proficient with Microsoft desktop applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), P6, ProjectWise and Alfresco.
Knowledge of Toolkit CDM software.
Strong safety ethos and understanding of CDM regulations.
Capable of working unsupervised, setting and meeting targets, and implementing cost‑saving solutions.
Familiar with quality assurance procedures and company design standards.
Full valid UK driving licence.
