Job Details Role: Senior Content Designer (Permanent) –
Remote (some UK travel may be required) Employment type: Full‑time
Responsibilities
Plan, write and manage usable and accessible content in line with GDS/GOV.UK Content Design guidelines and standards
Produce content that is accurate, timely, relevant, easy to understand, search‑engine optimised and meets style guidelines
Manage stakeholders and build successful relationships, including explaining content decisions
Use analytical and problem‑solving skills to help the team solve design problems and challenge assumptions
Champion user‑centred design practices for digital products and services
Advocate for accessible digital products and services
Actively participate in the Content Design Community of Practice, sharing ideas, best practice and offering help and support
Take responsibility for content quality, including coaching and mentoring content designers
Support team members’ learning, skill growth and career progression
Line‑manage members of the content design team, including offering project support and guidance, holding 1:1s, probation reviews and appraisals, approving timecards, expenses and leave, and supporting the Head of Content with training and development plans, project planning, recruitment activities and sales and marketing activities
Help create a welcoming, safe and inclusive team environment – encouraging mutual peer‑to‑peer support and helping individuals achieve a good work‑life balance
Qualifications & Skills
Experience of evidence‑based content design that meets GDS/GOV.UK standards, with a deep understanding of end‑to‑end journeys and the ability to identify journey fixes or content improvements
Work in an agile environment – understand agile approaches, advocate the role of content design in multidisciplinary teams and encourage healthy working relationships with other disciplines
Strong communication and interpersonal skills – able to communicate a range of information to a variety of audiences, e.g. explaining digital products and the GDS Service Standard in stakeholder‑friendly terms
Stakeholder relationship management – effectively negotiate, influence and build strategic relationships, keep focus on user needs and remove blockers
Strategic thinking – help lead the design and implementation of strategies and evaluate their impact to ensure business objectives and user needs are met
Understanding user needs – work closely and collaboratively with user researchers to gain insights and make decisions based on findings
Accessibility – put accessibility at the heart of content design approaches and encourage others to do the same
People management – assure the quality of more junior colleagues and coach and guide them to improve
Ensuring quality – regularly review and evaluate content, contributing to continuous improvements and iterations
Additional Skills & Behaviours
Proactive approach to environmental issues – embed environmental responsibility in practices and standards, and encourage clients to consider innovative solutions
Proactive approach to diversity, equality and inclusion – internally and with clients
Experience creating and updating prototypes, from paper sketches to coded prototypes (e.g. GOV.UK Prototype Kit)
