As a Software Engineer working on the backend, you have the opportunity to be responsible for the development, performance, and scaling of many areas – including our mobile apps, public website, internal systems, and infrastructure. You will work independently and will also be responsible for making technical decisions within a cross‑functional team.
Relocation support cannot be provided for this role, so candidates must be currently based in the UK to be considered.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Rapidly develop next‑generation scalable, flexible, and high‑performance systems, with end‑to‑end ownership by monitoring and adjusting SLIs and SLOs.
Resolve issues with the mobile apps, website, and internal systems, prioritising based on customer and business impact.
Act as an intermediary for problems, communicating with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
Lead A/B testing, coordinating thousands of experiments that run concurrently and interact with each other.
Evaluate customer needs and design optimal solutions, assessing programming language choices, architecture, and risk.
Contribute to Booking.com’s growth through interviewing, onboarding, or other recruitment efforts.
Role Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum 5 years of professional software development experience.
Proven experience with two or more server‑side programming languages (Java, Python, Perl, C++, Go, Scala, etc.).
Demonstrable experience with MySQL and PostgreSQL or similar relational databases.
Previous experience with distributed systems.
Familiarity with JavaScript ecosystems (Node.js, TypeScript, JSX).
Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
Experience working on large‑scale products and systems that benefit either the end user or internal engineering teams.
Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
