Primary Design Engineer – High Voltage Renewables Contract Type: Permanent | Full-time
We are seeking an experienced
Primary Design Engineer
to join our
High‑Voltage Renewables Engineering Team
at Mitie Projects. This critical role ensures the safe, reliable and efficient operation of electrical networks through high‑quality
substation layouts
and
earthing design .
Key Responsibilities
Primary Design Engineering
for HV/EHV AC substations (11kV–132kV), including AIS and GIS.
Produce electrical layouts for substations, cable routes, LV systems, switchrooms and control rooms.
Design and analyse
earthing systems
for substations, renewable energy sites (solar, wind, battery) and grid connections – with support from the earthing engineer.
Perform soil resistivity testing, EPR studies, touch/step voltage assessments and lightning risk assessments.
Develop technical specifications for major electrical plant and ensure compliance with
British and International Standards .
Interface with multidisciplinary teams (structural, planning, CAD) and manage external design suppliers.
Ensure compliance with
CDM Regulations 2015 , embed safety and sustainability by design.
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development.
Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred).
Proven experience in
primary electrical design
for HV/EHV substations and BoP projects.
Strong knowledge of industry standards: BS7671, ENATS, NGTS, BS EN 61936‑1, BS7354, etc.
Familiarity with
G81 standards
and DNO‑approved equipment registers.
Ability to manage complex design interfaces and produce accurate technical documentation.
Proficiency in busbar calculations, earthing layouts and risk assessments.
Working knowledge of CDM Regulations and designer responsibilities.
Desirable: Experience with
3D CAD tools
(e.g. Revit) and earthing modelling software (CDEGS).
