ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Head of Canadian Cloud and Colocation, the Director, Cloud Operations provides technology leadership and direction for cloud infrastructure across Hut 8 while operating in a fast paced, startup style environment. This role requires a leader who is equally comfortable setting strategy and rolling up their sleeves to execute. The Director is expected to be deeply engaged in day to day operations, stepping into the weeds when needed to solve problems, unblock teams, and ensure work gets done. This leader translates vision into a highly reliable, cost effective cloud environment while driving a culture of ownership, urgency, and operational excellence.
Some of the responsibilities you can expect include the following:
• Lead, build, and actively support the Cloud Operations and Support teams, fostering a high accountability culture focused on execution, customer value, and continuous improvement. This is a hands on leadership role that requires direct involvement in operational work when needed.
• Develop and execute a cloud infrastructure and operations strategy that scales with business growth, while remaining pragmatic and execution focused in a startup environment. This includes direct involvement in implementation, troubleshooting, and optimization efforts.
• Own cloud infrastructure budgeting and vendor strategy, including hands on evaluation of tradeoffs, cost optimization opportunities, and third party performance.
• Operate as a working cloud infrastructure expert who can move fluidly between strategic planning and tactical problem solving, bridging technical and non technical requirements across the business.
• Serve as a subject matter expert in Infrastructure and Operations, supporting peers and leadership in driving the overall CIO strategy through direct contribution and execution.
• Be accountable for delivering continuous process improvements, system reliability, and KPI performance, including overall system availability.
• Manage third party relationships, contracts, and service delivery, with a strong bias toward action and outcomes rather than oversight alone.
• Ensure security best practices are implemented across cloud operations through direct ownership, review, and enforcement.
• Establish and maintain comprehensive security monitoring and logging, personally engaging in incident response and root cause analysis when required.
• Ensure regular vulnerability assessments and penetration testing are completed and remediated in a timely and practical manner.
• Develop and execute an operational security strategy aligned with business goals, while remaining flexible and execution oriented as the organization evolves.
• Lead and participate in security incident response, including detection, containment, eradication, and recovery.
• Coordinate and participate in security audits and assessments, taking ownership of closing gaps rather than delegating responsibility.
• Continuously update security policies and operational practices based on emerging threats, lessons learned, and real world experience.
• Promote a security conscious and execution driven culture through direct engagement, coaching, and example.
ABOUT YOU
• BA in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field. MA in Computer Science, Engineering, or Business preferred. Equivalent operational experience may substitute for formal education.
• Minimum 10 years of technical, hands on infrastructure and operations experience.
• Security certification considered an asset.
• 3 to 5 years of experience leading technical teams, ideally in high growth or startup style environments.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to operate at both strategic and tactical levels.
• Hands on experience with VMware and OpenStack.
• Strong DevOps and automation experience, with a bias toward building and improving systems directly.
• Proven ability to partner with business leaders while remaining accountable for execution.
• Demonstrated success as a change leader who builds high performance teams through action and example.
• Ability to develop, manage, and track budgets and purchases with discipline and transparency.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and shifting requirements while ensuring core operational work gets done.
• Strong analytical, problem solving, prioritization, and organizational skills.
• Effective team leadership skills, including coaching, delegation, and direct contribution when needed.
