*CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO APPLICANTS WHO ARE CERTIFIED EMTS AND WILLING TO BECOME A LICENSED PARAMEDIC WITHIN ONE YEAR (WITH ORGANIZATION SUPPORT / TUITION REIMBURSEMENT).*
A clinically competent Paramedic who assumes responsibility and accountability to provide advanced emergency care in out-of-hospital setting, including the evaluation, treatment, and transport of injured and/or ill adult, pediatric and newborn patients in accordance with standard operating procedures. In hospital setting, assists Registered Nurse and Advanced Provider in providing care from neonate to geriatric patients. Under direction of Registered Nurse and/or Provider, assists with tasks and procedures not specifically denied by Nursing policy or State of Iowa EMS Advanced Care Law/Administrative Rules, applicable to paramedic.
The Paramedic provides care to these patients with therapeutic use of self, the environment/ instrumentation, and other health care team members. Serves as a patient advocate and a liaison between ancillary departments, physicians, and community resources. The Paramedic is responsible for the direction of personnel assigned as needed.
* Maintains confidentiality of all hospital matters. This includes the confidentiality of patients, co-workers and the Van Diest Medical Center organization.
* Demonstrates responsibility & accountability for adherence to organizational and departmental values and standards.
* Demonstrates accountability to patients, co-workers and the organization.
* Completes all required Competencies*.*
* Adheres to Standard Precautions, Exposure Control Plan, Hospital Safety and Infection Control Policies.
* Performs efficiently in all situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate person(s), and documenting events. Able to prioritize care based on patient need, resources available and personnel.
* Demonstrates a sound knowledge base in the care of and decision making for designated patients ranging from neonate to geriatric.
* Seeks validation of knowledge base, skill level, and decision-making. Acts as a resource to or assists other nursing departments as needed.
* Provide medical control via radio, possibly in a physician designee role; in a professional manner.
* Serves as a role model, patient advocate, educator for patient and significant others, and hospital ambassador through effective and positive verbal and non-verbal communication.
* Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and unit(s) functioning. Strives to manage situation in a reduced risk manner. Follows EMTALA regulations.
* Meets and maintains all educational requirements as specified by job descriptions. Obtains enough trauma specific continuing education to maintain compliance with the hospitals trauma certification level by the Iowa Department of Health & Human Services.
* Participates in the orientation of new Emergency Department/ EMS staff.
* Supports staffing scheduling needs of the department(s).
* Demonstrates ability to pass annual competency and skills training in the Emergency Department/EMS.
* Demonstrates adequate keyboarding and computer skills to proficiently utilize computer programs within the Emergency Department/EMS.
* Supervises EMTs/A-EMTs in pre-hospital setting.
Three 12-hour Night Shifts (7pm-7:30am) per week with Call. Every 3rd weekend and 3rd holiday rotation.
Wage commensurate with experience.
*Requirements*
* Possess a current certification as a Paramedic issued by the State of Iowa. Successful Completion of an accredited Paramedic Program
* Possession of current State of Iowa driver’s license.
* Acceptable driving record.
* BLS certification prior to the end of orientation and/or working independently.
* ACLS & PALS certification within 6 months and prior to working independently.
* Mandatory dependent adult & child abuse education certification.
* MOAB/ De-escalation training within the first six months of hire when available
* Knowledge of basic arrhythmia and 12-Lead interpretation.
* Certification in PHTLS or BTLS preferred.
* Hospital-based ambulance service experience preferred.
* Must maintain driving record acceptable to hospitals insurance carrier.
* Strong interpersonal relationship skills: Works closely with patients, families, peers, supervisors, physicians, and other health team members.
* Strong communication skills with and on behalf of patients, and with other staff members.
* Must be able to meet the physical requirements as outlined in the Job Requirements document.
* This position requires successful completion of a Physical Capacity Profile screening.
