Position Summary

The Tsartlip First Nation is pleased to invite applicants to apply to the permanent, full-time
Elder's Coordinator
position.

The Elders' Coordinator (Coordinator) is responsible for initiating, developing, and coordinating culturally appropriate programs and services for Tsartlip Elders. A key priority of this role is to initiate and establish a Tsartlip Elders' Committee to provide Elders with a strong voice in advising the committee and shaping community and health programs.

The Coordinator will organize social, cultural, recreational, and educational activities that promote Elder wellbeing, reduce social isolation, and honour the sharing of traditional knowledge with younger generations. This position works within a culturally safe, holistic, and community-centered approach.

Education and Experience

  • Grade 12 graduation (Dogwood or BC Adult Graduation Diploma);
  • Experience working with Elders or persons with diverse needs;
  • Possess or willing to undergo training for a valid WHMIS certificate;
  • Possess or willing to undergo training for a valid standard first aid and CPR certificate;
  • Class 5 driver's licence, adequate insurance, a reliable vehicle plus a clean driver's abstract is required;
  • Clean criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Initiate and establish the Tsartlip Elders' Committee, including drafting terms of reference, recruiting members, and coordinating initial meetings;
  • Organize Elders' Luncheons, social gatherings, and cultural events to strengthen community connections and promote wellbeing;
  • Work with community nurses, health practitioners, and service providers to plan and deliver educational sessions to increase Elders' knowledge of health coverage, benefits, and community resources;
  • Work with community nurses, health practitioners and service providers to identify and reduce barriers to accessing medications and health supports;
  • Identify and honour knowledge holders, ensuring they are supported in passing cultural teachings, language, and traditions to younger generations;
  • Facilitate and/or organize workshops to empower and nurture Elder leadership in decision-making and community development;
  • Assist Elders with accessing services, resources, and transportation to participate in programs and activities;
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records in compliance with privacy legislation and Nation policy;
  • Seeks out and participates in relevant continuing professional education opportunities (training and workshops) to maintain current and competent practice, and to enhance program services;
