Budtender / Key Holder – Job Overview

The Budtender / Key Holder is a frontline customer service role responsible for creating an exceptional retail experience while ensuring smooth daily dispensary operations. This position combines product knowledge, sales skills, compliance awareness, and leadership responsibilities, including opening/closing duties and maintaining store security. You will help customers find the right products, provide education, and ensure the store runs efficiently and professionally.

Job Description

As a Budtender / Key Holder, you will guide customers through their cannabis purchasing experience, offer knowledgeable recommendations, handle sales transactions, and maintain a clean and organized store environment. In addition to standard budtender duties, you will assist with store operations such as opening and closing procedures, cash reconciliation, inventory handling, and acting as a shift lead when management is not present. This role requires exceptional communication, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to regulatory compliance.

Required Experience

  • 1–2 years of retail, hospitality, or customer service experience (cannabis retail experience is an asset but not required)
  • Previous key holder or supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience with POS systems and cash handling
  • Strong understanding of cannabis products, strains, consumption methods, and responsible use (or willingness to learn quickly)
  • Knowledge of cannabis regulations and compliance requirements (training provided)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with high accuracy
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills

Key ResponsibilitiesCustomer Service

  • Greet customers and provide personalized product recommendations
  • Educate customers on strains, THC/CBD levels, formats, dosing, and safe consumption
  • Maintain a welcoming, positive, and professional environment
  • Assist customers with questions, concerns, and product selection

Sales & POS

  • Process transactions accurately and efficiently
  • Upsell and promote products based on customer needs
  • Manage cash handling and follow secure financial procedures
  • Ensure all sales comply with legal and regulatory requirements

Store Operations

  • Perform opening and closing procedures as a designated key holder
  • Complete daily cash counts and deposits
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the store
  • Restock shelves, merchandising, and labeling

Compliance & Security

  • Verify customer ID and eligibility for purchase
  • Maintain strict adherence to provincial cannabis regulations
  • Monitor store safety and security procedures
  • Report any incidents, discrepancies, or compliance issues

Inventory

  • Assist with inventory counts, receiving, and product rotation
  • Track product movement and ensure accurate record-keeping
  • Communicate inventory needs to management

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $17.60-$20.00 per hour

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Scarborough, ON (M1T): reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Experience:

  • Manager: 1 year (preferred)
