Microsoft Systems Engineer

Clearance Requirements:
Candidates must be eligible for a public trust level background check as a precondition of employment

Location:
Candidates will be required to work onsite 1 day per week in the Rockville, MD area.

Job Requirements

Microsoft Server & Platform Administration

• Administer, maintain, and support Windows Server environments (on-prem and/or cloud-hosted).
• Manage core Microsoft services such as Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, and file/print services.
• Implement system performance tuning strategies to optimize resource utilization and availability.
• Monitor server health, identify potential issues, and implement corrective actions.

Microsoft 365 / Azure / Cloud Integration

• Support and administer Microsoft 365 services (Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Teams, OneDrive) as needed.
• Manage identity and access using Azure AD / Entra ID, including conditional access and MFA configurations.
• Support migration and integration of Microsoft workloads into cloud environments (e.g., Windows servers, IIS, and SQL Server instances running in AWS or hybrid environments).

Systems Design & Configuration

• Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to design, configure, and implement Microsoft-based solutions.
• Optimize system architectures for performance, scalability, and maintainability.
• Develop and maintain system documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures.

Troubleshooting & Operations

• Diagnose and resolve Microsoft platform–related issues (authentication, connectivity, performance, patching) in a timely manner.
• Provide Tier 2/3 technical support to end-users and application teams.
• Participate in on-call or after-hours support rotations as required.

Backup, Recovery & Business Continuity

• Manage and validate backups, recovery procedures, and disaster recovery plans for Microsoft systems.
• Assist in testing and refining DR and continuity-of-operations (COOP) capabilities.

Security & Compliance

• Implement and maintain security baselines for Windows Server, Active Directory, and Microsoft 365.
• Apply patches and updates in accordance with federal and organizational policies.
• Stay current on Microsoft security best practices and assist with hardening, logging, and audit readiness.

Capacity & Performance Planning

• Monitor system capacity and performance metrics across servers and services.
• Plan for future capacity needs and recommend upgrades or optimizations.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of experience in Microsoft systems engineering or administration (Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, and/or Azure).
• Bachelor's degree
• Experience supporting enterprise or federal IT environments is preferred.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance based on client requirements.
