Are you customer-service driven with strong analytical and interpretive skills? Are you ready to play an important role in managing Ontario's highway corridor? Then consider this exciting opportunity with the Ministry of Transportation.

Please note this competition is for two positions: one temporary for 12 months in duration; one seasonal for 42 weeks in duration.

About the job

In this role, you will:

  • Inspect highway corridor and ensure compliance with legislation, regulations and policies
  • Review and evaluate permit applications and issue permits for corridor activities such as highway access, signing, encroachments and building and land use
  • Coordinate utility relocations
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders such ministry staff, municipalities, consultants, and the public
  • Identify and resolve problems related to corridor management

Note: the successful candidate will be required to travel on a bi-weekly basis, within the region.

What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
  • The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G license or equivalent to travel to meetings, conduct field visits and/or inspect highway corridor where public transit is not available. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's license upon being hired.
Engineering and Technical Skills
  • you have the ability to interpret and apply related policies, procedures, standards and legislation
  • you have the ability to read and interpret highway and construction plans, reports and site plans
  • you have an understanding of highway construction and land use planning process.
Communication Skills
  • you have proven interpersonal and communication skills to deal effectively with other office personal and a wide range of external stakeholders such as, the public, utility companies, developers, municipalities and elected officials
  • you have written communication skills to prepare documents such as permits, correspondence and briefing notes
  • you have the ability to provide advice and technical and legal information to clients who are unfamiliar with terminology
Analytical, Organizational and Computer Skills
  • you have proven analytical and problem-solving skills to assess compliance of permit applications, inspect corridors, suggest alternate designs or options and resolve related issues with external clients
  • you have demonstrated planning, organizational and prioritization skills
  • you have skills and knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint in order to prepare written correspondence and reports, and for the analysis of data
