*General Description: *
The Connecticut Proton Therapy Center (CPTC) is seeking a dedicated and qualified Proton Clinical Medical Physicist to join our team in Wallingford, CT. As the state’s first proton therapy facility – a collaboration between Hartford HealthCare and Yale New Haven Health System – we are committed to delivering state-of-the-art cancer care through advanced technology and compassionate expertise.
CPTC features a cutting-edge, single-room IBA Proteus®ONE proton delivery system, offering both intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) and proton arc capabilities. We utilize the RayStation for treatment planning and the RayCare for record and verification, with patient simulation on a Philips dual-energy CT.
The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in establishing and commissioning Connecticut’s first proton therapy system. As we prepare to begin treating patients in late 2026, you will support clinical operations, conduct acceptance testing and commissioning, oversee routine QA, and collaborate closely with the Director of Medical Physics and Dosimetry and a multidisciplinary team of therapists, physicians, and dosimetrists.
*Key Responsibilities: *
* Participate in the acceptance and commissioning of the proton therapy system, associated equipment, treatment planning, and R&V systems to meet program launch deadlines.
* Develop and implement robust quality assurance (QA) programs; perform calibration, QA, and maintenance of radiation therapy equipment; and ensure proper recordkeeping.
* Support the treatment planning team to facilitate high-quality, efficient workflows and effective treatment plan production throughout the patient care process.
* Perform routine physics tasks, including treatment planning assistance, proton plan and chart checks, special physics consultations, on-call coverage, and coordination of equipment repair and maintenance.
* Collaborate with the in-house Insurance and Billing Coordinator to streamline processes and assist with account and appeals documentation.
* Proactively identify clinical challenges and participate in the ongoing development and maintenance of operational procedures.
* Assist the Radiation Safety Officer with annual reporting, incident documentation, and compliance with hospital, state, and federal regulations.
* Perform other clinical-related duties as assigned.
*Required Skills and Abilities: *
*Clinical/Technical: *
* Extensive knowledge of modern radiation therapy systems and sub-systems especially regarding proton therapy.
* Extensive knowledge of simulation, imaging and treatment procedures and equipment, radiation safety, regulatory and licensing issues for proton therapy.
* Experience and fluency in modern treatment planning software systems especially those for proton therapy. Experience with RaySearch products (e.g. Raystation) is preferred.
* Is proficient in using radiation measuring equipment, treatment planning computers, and Record and Verify systems.
* Scripting/automation tool experience is valued, but not required.
*Overall: *
* Proven organizational and time management skills.
* Ability to work as a member of a team to achieve a variety of objectives
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to lead by example and react effectively.
* Computer skills including MS Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint.
*Education/Degree/Qualifications: *
* M.S. or Ph.D. in Medical Physics or a related field is required.
* ABR/ABMP board certification or board-eligible in Therapeutic Medical Physics.
* A minimum of 3 years Radiation Oncology experience
* Proton Therapy experience is valued but not required.
* Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary, team-driven environment.
The successful candidate will also qualify for an academic appointment in the Yale Department of Therapeutic Radiology, with opportunities to:
* Engage in research and development projects in collaboration with the team as directed by the Director of Medical Physics and Dosimetry.
* Participate in the training and mentorship of medical physics and radiation oncology residents, as well as fellows rotating at the center.
