WHO YOU ARE We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced SQL Server Database Administrator (DBA) with a strong focus on Application DBA responsibilities. This position is in the Labor Market Department (LMI) of the TWC’s Division of Information Innovation and Insight (I|3). The DBA will work closely with our programming staff and SQL‑proficient “power users”, and report directly to the LMI IT Manager. Unlike an infrastructure DBA responsible for backups, etc., this role is deeply aligned with SQL users and applications, focusing on database design, query optimization, and data integration to support evolving LMI applications.
Compelling Candidates Will Have
Experience and/or education in computer science, information technology, or a related field.
Proven experience in database design, development, and application support.
Expert‑level knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server (2016, 2019, and 2022).
Strong proficiency in SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) for complex ETL processes.
Experience managing and partitioning large‑scale tables to optimize performance.
Strong problem‑solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
The ability to perform highly complex database administration work under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
WHAT YOU WILL DO The Database Administrator IV will perform advanced (senior‑level) database administration work. You will coordinate and/or perform work on database projects that are highly complex in nature and large in scale; design and implement data models; develop and maintain ETL processes; and provide technical guidance to the team to ensure efficient data access and integrity. The primary project assigned will involve inventing a database design with yet‑to‑be‑finalized requirements for an interactive workflow application, so you would be expected to suggest ideas and collaborate with SQL‑savvy subject matter experts. A related, archival database has close to 2 billion rows of data and needs re‑architecting to optimize loading and query performance.
Design, develop, and maintain complex relational databases that support LMI applications.
Create, deploy, and maintain complex SSIS packages to automate data ingestion and transformation from various external and internal sources.
Implement and manage table partitioning strategies for very large databases to ensure high performance and maintainability.
Collaborate with developers and power users to review and optimize T‑SQL code, stored procedures, and execution plans to ensure maximum application efficiency.
Work with a third‑party vendor on interfaces to their database.
Develop and maintain database schemas, constraints, and indexes to support application requirements while ensuring data integrity.
Design and execute complex SQL queries and scripts to support ad‑hoc reporting and data analysis requests.
Act as a technical advisor to the team, assisting in the design of data‑driven features and resolving complex data‑related issues.
Document database architecture, ETL workflows, and data dictionaries to facilitate knowledge sharing and future enhancements.
Perform database performance tuning and monitoring, specifically focusing on application‑level bottlenecks and query optimization.
Play a key role in the LMI application lifecycle, ensuring database changes are seamlessly integrated into development, testing, and production environments.
YOU QUALIFY WITH
Four years of full‑time experience in computer programming and/or systems analysis.
Relevant academic credits may be applied toward experience/qualifications for this position.
YOU ARE A GREAT FIT WITH
Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related field.
Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of database administration and systems analysis.
Expertise in writing clean, maintainable, and high‑performance T‑SQL code.
Proven experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
Advanced knowledge of table partitioning and indexing strategies for large‑scale data environments.
Skill in database modeling and normalization to support scalable software applications.
Ability to process information logically; to design database systems logic; to code, test, and debug database objects; and to communicate effectively.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills to effectively work with cross‑functional development teams.
A customer‑centric approach with a commitment to providing exceptional service and data accuracy.
YOU GAIN
A Family Friendly Certified Workplace.
Competitive salary: $7,015.00 – $8,227.50/month (commensurate with experience).
Defined Retirement Benefit Plan.
Optional 401(k) and 457 accounts.
Medical Insurance.
Paid time off, including time for vacation, sick and family care leave.
Additional benefits for active employees can be found at https://www.ers.texas.gov/Active-Employees/Health-Benefits.
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification document form upon hire. A position utilizing this classification will be designated as security sensitive according to the Texas Labor Code, Section 301.042.
