Instructor Pool Graphic Design UC Berkeley Extension Position title:
Instructor (Non-Senate, Non-Tenure Track) Salary range:
Compensation varies by course delivery format. For a synchronous Live Online course, an estimated total per course is $1,200 - $3,600. For an asynchronous Fixed Date Online course, the rate is $150 - $165 per enrolled student, with a total per course estimate of roughly $1,200 - $3,300. Compensation may be shared among co-instructors based on percentage of course content taught. Compensation is determined by course length, units, enrollment, budget, and other factors. Percent time:

Some appointments may begin as early as the spring semester. Review timeline:
Applicants are considered as needs arise; pool does not guarantee a position. The pool remains in place for 9-12 months. Those wishing to remain beyond the final closing date must reapply. Position duration:
Course length varies by subject, level, format, schedule, and credits. For fall, spring, and summer semesters, typical lengths range from approximately 5 to 16 weeks. UC Berkeley Extension (UNEX), the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley, builds bridges between UC Berkeley and the public. UNEX serves the professional and continuing education goals of thousands of people each year and supports the University mission to extend research and scholarship to a global community, increase access to higher education for non-traditional, online, and international students, and improve the workforce. UC Berkeley Extension is part of the division under the Dean of Extended Education that also includes Berkeley Summer Sessions, Berkeley Study Abroad, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. UC Berkeley Extension invites applications for a pool of qualified, dynamic instructors in Graphic Design to teach online courses in the Arts and Humanities department. Courses are offered online: Online instruction is delivered asynchronously via Canvas or synchronously via Zoom. Most synchronous live online courses are offered in the evening and on weekends (Pacific Time). Course Subjects Qualified applicants should have current subject matter expertise and/or teaching knowledge in Graphic Design and related topics. The department seeks candidates who support student success through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Duties vary by instruction method (Synchronous Live Online or Asynchronous Online). For synchronous instruction (live online courses): syllabus development; assignment development; lesson planning for class meetings; preparing and submitting required texts and course materials; updating Canvas course site; delivering lectures, presentations, and learning activities for all required hours of instruction. For asynchronous instruction (fixed date online courses): review syllabus and pre-populated content; use Canvas classroom tools; request training needs from Program Director or Department Director. For all instruction: complete required trainings; respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner; grade and post final grades to the instructor portal; use University-approved platforms (Canvas, Zoom, Google Workspace, etc.); follow policies and guidelines; respond to requests from Program Director or Department Director. Basic qualifications
(required at time of application) Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree required. Additional qualifications
(required at start) 5 or more years of professional industry work experience since degree, or 5+ years of teaching experience since degree. USA Residency and USA Work Authorization:
All work must be performed in the United States, in person or online. For non-US citizens or permanent residents, valid US work authorization is required for the duration of employment. The department does not sponsor work visas. Preferred qualifications Advanced degree in graphic design, advertising design, art direction, or related area. 5+ years of professional experience in graphic, visual or communication design, advertising, art direction, motion design, animation, or marketing. Proficiency in two or more Adobe Apps: Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Firefly, After Effects, Premier Pro. Proficiency in Figma. Typographic skills, page layout, color theory, accessibility-minded design. Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and GitHub with accessibility in design. Experience writing technical content and project specs. Knowledge of new technologies and AI integration with graphic design. Teaching or coaching experience in the course subject within a U.S. college/university or corporate environment. Experience creating syllabi, learning objectives, lectures, activities, assignments, assessments, exams, and quizzes. Experience teaching online or developing online course content. Strong communication and organizational skills; ability to collaborate in a team; willingness to learn new technology and tools (Canvas, Panopto, Zoom, Google Workspace, etc.).
