Machining Manager

Location: Detroit, MI

Compensation: $35-50 hourly + full benefits

Position Summary

The Machining Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the machining department, ensuring the efficient operation of equipment, adherence to production schedules, and maintaining high-quality standards. This role involves managing our machining leads and machine operators, coordinating with other departments, and driving continuous improvement initiatives in a steel manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operations Management:
  • Oversee daily machining operations
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate production activities to meet deadlines.
  • Monitor and maintain machinery to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime.
  • Team Leadership:
  • Supervise, train, and mentor a team of machining leads and machinists.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and manage staffing levels.
  • Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, and accountability.
  • Quality Assurance:
  • Ensure all products meet quality standards and customer specifications.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Control department to address any deviations or defects.
  • Implement quality improvement initiatives and maintain ISO or other relevant certifications.
  • Process Improvement:
  • Identify opportunities to improve machining processes, reduce cycle times, and increase efficiency.
  • Lead initiatives to implement lean manufacturing techniques and reduce waste.
  • Stay updated on industry advancements and integrate new technologies as appropriate.
  • Budget and Inventory Management:
  • Manage departmental budgets, including tooling and maintenance costs.
  • Monitor inventory levels for raw materials, tools, and consumables.
  • Procure all necessary supplies for department.
  • Safety Compliance:
  • Ensure all safety protocols are followed, including proper use of PPE.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, observations, and training sessions.
  • Address and mitigate potential hazards in the workplace.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience considered.
  • Experience:
  • 10+ years in machining or steel manufacturing, with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC machining, manual lathes, and mills.
  • Proven track record of managing teams in a manufacturing environment.
  • Skills:
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of machining processes, tooling, and materials.
  • Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and ERP systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office
  • Experience working with SAP a plus
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies.
