Machining Manager
Location: Detroit, MI
Compensation: $35-50 hourly + full benefits
Position Summary
The Machining Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the machining department, ensuring the efficient operation of equipment, adherence to production schedules, and maintaining high-quality standards. This role involves managing our machining leads and machine operators, coordinating with other departments, and driving continuous improvement initiatives in a steel manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operations Management:
- Oversee daily machining operations
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate production activities to meet deadlines.
- Monitor and maintain machinery to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime.
- Team Leadership:
- Supervise, train, and mentor a team of machining leads and machinists.
- Conduct performance evaluations, provide feedback, and manage staffing levels.
- Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, and accountability.
- Quality Assurance:
- Ensure all products meet quality standards and customer specifications.
- Collaborate with the Quality Control department to address any deviations or defects.
- Implement quality improvement initiatives and maintain ISO or other relevant certifications.
- Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities to improve machining processes, reduce cycle times, and increase efficiency.
- Lead initiatives to implement lean manufacturing techniques and reduce waste.
- Stay updated on industry advancements and integrate new technologies as appropriate.
- Budget and Inventory Management:
- Manage departmental budgets, including tooling and maintenance costs.
- Monitor inventory levels for raw materials, tools, and consumables.
- Procure all necessary supplies for department.
- Safety Compliance:
- Ensure all safety protocols are followed, including proper use of PPE.
- Conduct regular safety audits, observations, and training sessions.
- Address and mitigate potential hazards in the workplace.
Qualifications
- Education:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience considered. - Experience:
- 10+ years in machining or steel manufacturing, with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
- Hands-on experience with CNC machining, manual lathes, and mills.
- Proven track record of managing teams in a manufacturing environment.
- Skills:
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
- In-depth knowledge of machining processes, tooling, and materials.
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and ERP systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft office
- Experience working with SAP a plus
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies.
